Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!

get a spray bottle and fill it with water, add a small amount of dish soap, mix, and spray. bubbles will form if theres a leak on the part you spray.

I took my car back to the dealership and complained about the noise and broken motor mount, and they ended up fixing a lot of stuff.

Transmission mount

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!

oh nice. wow im surprised they did all that!

for the engine, you can take the valve cover off and paint it with hi temp black. you can paint the heatshield too if you want. i would leave it on, it keeps heat out of the engine bay and also keeps the exhaust hotter, both of which are good things. you can get aftermarket header like in the pic, and get it jet coated from jet-hot.com which will be just like a heat shield.

any auto store, but look at the different types of finish like glossy, enamel, flat, etc. just make sure its rated for a hi temp. regular paint will fall apart onthe engine.

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!

most people remove the valve cover, otherwise its impossible to paint the whole thing with all the cables and stuff on it. you want to at least wipe it with degreaser and then alcohol so you have a good surface for paint to stick to. then just follow the directions on the paint can. every paint has different drying times but its a good bet you need to wait at least 24 hrs.

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!

My 04 Civic VP coupe MT is about to hit 70k miles and since I didn't ask when the trans fluid had been changed when i bought it (about 1 year ago @55k mi), I was planning on getting it taken care of with the oil as well.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...d=220557113328

Is this a good buy? would you trust the magnet from an ebay product? Should I ask any questions about it?

ALSO

when I bought the car the damn financier talked me into a 4-year warranty for $1800. I've been looking into Honda's warranty claims pay out and it seems like most people get screwed. It maybe that the people who don't have problems don't post about it, but if I'm doing all the service myself is it worth it to keep this thing? I've had the car for a year and when I bought it was CARFAX certified one owner no issues or accidents at all, there obviously haven't been any problems. I'm paying 8.9% interest on it, but I'm only losing about $300 dollars in interest over the entire life of the loan. I also have a short shifter but that's it. I'm afraid of doing any other mods and voiding the warranty. I've heard that without proof of service at a Honda dealership they won't honor a warranty. What do you think? Should I cancel it and take $1400 off my loan amount? Do they not honor most claims?

Thanks man!

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!

for the seatbelt, you mean so it doesnt beep if youre not wearing it? easiest way is goto a junkyard, get the buckle and cut the belt off, then stick that in your stock piece.

that oil drain plug is prolly okay, i got the one from passwordjdm.com and have been happy with it. there is only a very thin film of sludge around it tho, nothing spectacular. yeah extended warranty never pays off, i doubt you would have enough problems to justify the cost. i paid $1k for a 75k mile warranty and only claimed $500 for an alternator. if its aftermarket warranty, usually they dont care about mods. hondacare warranty they are more strict.

What an enriching posting by the original author. I would like assistance in how I can turn down the static on my favorite oldies music channel? When I go for groceries on a Monday morning, I like to get energized by listening to some good oldies beats. How do I get rid of the static? Thank you.

if you want better reception, they sell antenna signal boosters you could try. or get aftermarket radio, which almost always has better signal than the honda unit.

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!

Hi

I'm looking for some advice as well as some possible DIY information. I made another thread about this in a different section, but you seem like a very helpful person and I'd like to ask you to. Most of this is copy/paste.

I'm looking for a bit of advice for what to do with my car. It's a 2001 Honda Civic Coupe LX (with the VTEC engine, if that's important.) The exhaust manifold is cracked and needs to be replaced. It's an LX so it's one of those manifolds that has a catalytic converter integrated into it. I've been told that you can't sell used catalytic converters due to EPA regulations. After looking around a bit, it seems that new versions of an equivalent part are retardedly expensive.

After reading these forums a bit, I stumbled across this guide. It did a pretty good job at clearing everything up, although I still have some questions.

It looks like it boils down to the following.

A) Suck it and pay $250~$350 for a brand new catalytic exhaust convertifold.
B) Buy an EX header and an EX catalytic converter and have someone fit it to work with the rest of the exhaust system.
C) Buy an EX header and install an aftermarket exhaust system.

Plan A is the simple plan that sort of makes me sigh, although it's on the table. Plan B just seems like a stupid idea. Plan C seems somewhat appropriate, although I'm not sure exactly what I would need to purchase because I'm a rookie when it comes to cars.

Some other factors to consider: There is some rust on the exhaust piping that runs along the undercarriage. This makes plan C a bit more appealing. However, there is a good chance I will sell this car. I'm thinking of picking up a hatchback style car. I'm not sure how long it will take me to do this though, I'm indecisive sometimes. In the mean time I'd really like the smell of exhaust to go away.

If I do go with plan C, being able to install it by myself would be ideal. I don't have the equipment or know-how to weld, so if custom fitting pipes was required then I'd have to take it to a specialist.

Any sort of advice, recommendations, or guides would be very well received. Thanks~!

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!

you could also take the old cat to a welding shop and see if they can patch the crack. otherwise best option is convert to the EX exhaust system which is much less trouble. i would go with ex header, ex cat, and ex catback, ofcourse for the header and catback you can go oem or aftermarket depending on your preference. just be sure to keep the oem ex cat. but if you plan to sell the car, i wouldnt put that much effort into it. if the welding shop says no, you may even try a bit a jb weld to fix yourself. worse case it doesnt work and you have to get a new cat. the lx cats are expensive from honda, but they also make aftermarket replacements (check ebay) that would work fine unless you live in california.

Hey gearbox, i just bought 2 12" kenwood subs and a 1600 watt boss amp. they also gave me some 4 gauge wires. I've been told that i will need a capacitor to run it (considering i have an all alpine system already). Any ideas how many farads i would need?

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!

you never need a capacitor. they dont do anything except steal more power from the alternator to recharge themselves. the only reason people use em is to cover up light dimming problems at night. this does not fix the real problem, mainly the alternator is not putting out enough amps.

Ok. So all I really need to do is just get a better alternator?
