Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!
those break easily, altho i cant really see from the pic. you may want to think about changing it. you need a socket wrench set and a cheater pipe (exhaust pipe works well) to put over the wrench and get more leverage when removing the bolts. first put the front of the car on jackstands (both sides), set the ebrake, then find a small piece of thick plywood that fits under the oil pan without hitting anything else. put the wood under the oil pan and use a jack to hold it up against it. this is so that the engine does not move once you loosen the mount. take off the bolts holding the mount, and install the new one. be careful with the bottom bolt, you need to use a regular crescent wrench (not a socket wrench) due to tight clearance. be sure to tighten all bolts securely using the cheater pipe but do not break them. honda recommends replacing the bolts with new ones. i bought them but ended up reusing the old ones cause they were on backorder. so far no issues.

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!
yeah they just have twist out bulbs on the back. im not familiar with how the clutser comes off for the older civics, but usually there are some screws around the bezel trim piece.
Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!
another cluster questions for you:
I have a USD 2004 Civic DX (VP non-SRS) MT and want to add an OEM cluster with a tach. From the research I've done I know that in order to "plug and play" (no repinning) I need an 01-03 Civic cluster. My question is this: what all models can I use that will not require repinning?
Thanks GearBox!
P.S. by "models" I don't mean just LX, DX, EX, etc.... but transmission type, year, and all...
P.S.S. if I can't find a cluster around my mileage is it possible to get it reset? how does one go about that?

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!
you can use any 01-02 lx or ex cluster without repin. 03-05 lx and ex requires repin. auto vs manual doesnt matter, except autos have a shift strip next to the rpms. mileage you should try and match, because most places charge $150 to reset the mileage to what you want, and you must have proof of actual mileage. coupe and sedan clusters have different backlight (coupe orange, sedan green). if you post a pic i can tell you what car it came out of. also try to get an LX cluster otherwise the ABS light will always be on since you do not have that feature. if youre in canada, you need a cluster with kph.
Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!
Ok I didn't expect to find one this fast, and this one is pricey, but I'm thinking about making an offer on it for $100... what do you think:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...=STRK:MEWAX:IT
How could I take care of that pesky SRS light? Is there a way to easily remove the bulb?
Does the whole dash need to be removed to replace the cluster? From one comment it sounded like it is just held in with a couple bolts.
Thanks again man it's awesome being able to get good info directly...

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!
holy wow, usually those clusters go for $50, and the new led 03-05 ones for $100. thats crazy! try and offer 100 if the mileage matches, thats the only reason i would pay more. otherwise keep looking. but yes that is an 01-02 coupe cluster with red/orange backlight. but its for EX, so the ABS icon light will always be on. you can stick a piece of tape behind to block the light tho. or look for LX cluster.
Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!
yeah when I first saw that I thought it was my lucky day til I saw the price... bastard... but my current mileage is 67k and he lists 70k so it is damn close, considering it would be closer by the time it got here...
What about the swap itself? Is it as easy as I once had read? or does it require taking the whole dash off?

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!
no, just lower the wheel down (tilt function), remove the two screws at the top of the bezel, then stick your fingers in from the top and work them down to the bottom and pull the bezel straight out towards you. first time will be the hardest since there is glue in there. dont worry, there are also clips so it will go back on. ive had mine off tons of times and no issues with it being loose. then with bezel out, there are three more screws holding the cluster. remove those, then unplug green and blue connectors. swap clusters, and put everything back in.

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!
its better to just drain and refill once, drive it, then check the fluid. if it still looks dark, do another drain and refill a week later. i usually do a single drain and fill every year (or 10k miles) so there is always new fluid. it should be red color. if it is darker orange or black, its bad and will not protect as well.

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!
cheapest way is get a different gauge cluster off ebay for $50 and swap it out. if it works, theres the problem. if not, it could be a faulty fuel sending unit which is more expensive and harder to replace (in the fuel tank).
Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!
Gearbox,
My '03 Civic has 80k miles on it. Lately it has started "growling" or "rumbling" around 40 mph. It seems to be getting louder and louder and starts at lower speeds - around 30-35 mph.
I suspect the front wheel bearings are the problem but before I rip into it, I was hoping someone out there could offer some advice. Is there anything else it could be or is there a way to tell if it is actually the bearings?
Thanks.
FL350

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!
FL350-i hate to guess and say its the bearings when it could be alot of other things. i had that noise too and it actually turned out to be really crappy tires with uneven wear that were resonating at lower speeds. ive also heard of bad alignment causing excess noise. if it sounds like the growling is coming from the wheel and not the engine, a wheel bearing is possible but does it only do it on one side? cause two bearings failing together doesnt happen too often.
^what kind of alarm do you have, oem honda or aftermarket? it should say on the main control module usually under the dash. do you have remote for it?

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!
obdII is the computer diagnostic port to read engine codes. if you mean that plug in the center console area near gas pedal. check above the brake pedal by removing the fuse panel, usually thats where alarms go.

sounds like aftermarket DEI alarm. you have the keychain remotes? is the light blinking all the time?
Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!
Hey gearbox, im new to the civic forums because i just bought a 2001 civic lx 5 speed manual with 113k. Its a great car, and i like it a lot, but ive been hearing a noise. yes a noise lol.
When im in 2nd or 3rd gear and crusing along at say, 20 mph, and then hit the gas, there is a "clack" sound coming from the engine. its not really loud, cant hear it if the radio is on. It doesnt make the sound at all in high gear. Also there is no troube lights on.
thanks

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!
check the engine mount (front one near the header). i bet its broken for sure. those go out all the time and when you hit the gas, the engine will shift position and possibly make noises if there is metal contact.
Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!
Alright thanks a lot i will look at it today and see. I'm just glad its not the transmission. I bet you are right too because it also makes the same noise if i dont get a perfect take-off from 1st gear.
Can you give me a general idea about how much it would cost for them to replace the mount?

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!
My clutch pedal is a little stiff compared to other 7th gens. Been told to check the clutch fluid level. Looked around in the engine bay but couldn't find anything.
How do I check my clutch fluid?

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!
mount is $40, and its easy to change yourself if you have a jack, stands, socket wrench, and cheater pipe.
clutch fluid is in a tiny reservoir near the brake fluid i believe. and clutch fluid = brake fluid, uses the same stuff, just different reservoir.
