What kind of air intake do you have? My AEM Shorty makes a humming sound some times. Or you could have a dirty air filter. Or even a leaking intake manifold gasket. I think if it was a transmission thing it would change with speed. Check your PCV valve too. What comes in real handy is an automotive stethoscope. It has a probe on it you can put on certain things you think are making noise, and it will amplify what is going on inside of that part.

I'm pretty sure the bulbs are still good. When I tired plugging them into the rear, they at least lit up. Any other ideas?

hmm i really couldnt say except trace back the wiring. check the sockets and see if theyre connecting properly. sometimes the bulb seat gets twisted and the contacts cross and then nothing works.

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!

Do you know if anybody has done a DIY on doing a grill chop on the '03 hybrid bumper? And what's your opinion, I am about to order my new bumper, should I just replace the bumper ('02 sedan), or do the hybrid swap?

I was also wondering where you got your grill?

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!

I have a 98 civic ex d16y8 that has a problem with the cooling fan. It doesnt run at all even when the car has heated up. I would like to think that this is due to the temperature never really deviating but i have no idea.

The car seems to run fine so I dont understand what it could be

A/C and heat work,

I havent smelt anything burning and the block and never felt overly hot

Temp gauge moves on start up but doesnt deviate much from there even after hard driving

Fuse is good, dont know how to check relay, motor test dunno how to do(will multimeter work?)

I know, I hate the grill on the hybrid too! That's why I was wondering if anybody had gotten that bumper, but cut out the grill. I thought it might look cleaner on my car since I don't have a front license plate.

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!

i think the grill is part of the bumper tho...

not sure on the eibach coilovers, sounds like they are blown or not adjusted properly (if they are adjustable). some other guys have those and say they are very good. it should come with the full set of springs and shocks all eibach.

for the cooling fan, it has to be pretty hot outside for it to come on (above 80F). if you turn the ac on, both fans should come on instantly. if not, theres a problem with either the fan temp sensor or a relay or the fan wiring. the stock temp gauge is never accurate, it should sit at the same spot once warm and only go up if the engine is overheating.

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!

hi, im new to this site. i have an 2007 LX coupe, and i recently rear ended someone. luckily, the other guy didnt want to report it to insurance. i need to replace my headlights as well as my front bumper cover, so i just ordered roku creation plug n play halos and a remanufactured OEM front bumper cover from ebay. I have a friend who will paint the cover, but the seller informed me that it does not come with any of the neccesarry screws or clips. where do i get those? and how do i attach the bumper cover to the car? im soo lost lol

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!

well first question, no i dont think coupe and sedan are the same. the bolt holes and plug are in a different spot so i dont think you will be able to bolt it on properly. for electric, you would have to find a way to make your own switches (one for each mirror) or find a honda switch and try to figure out what all the wires and pins do. that will be tough tho.

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!

you need an aftermarket radio, the specific adapter harness for the car that will plug in to the stock harness, and a dash trim piece. the adapter wires need to be connected to the radio harness wires and matched to the proper functions. color should not be used as a guide. the adapter plug you bought and also the stereo instructions will tell you what each wire does. all these parts are available from most stereo shops like best buy.

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!

Hey Gearbox, do U work @ a shop in Reno? Nevermind I'd go broke on mods if I met U. The dash LEDs are sooo purrrty. What year/model is your car? Also, DIYwise do you know if a 99-00si catback will fit a 96 hatch (direct bolt-on & hangers w/ no modification) if I upgrade cat & header to EX. I swear I've been trying to nail this down for days cuz I hate to ask a stupid question that the answer's everywhere. This http://www.hopupracing.com/5zficaexsywi1.html is what I want but no options say 96-98Ex.

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!

I also have a question about the audio.
So i bought two harnesses, one that connects to the OEM harness, and one that goes to the aftermarket radio.

The aftermarket radio harness has that thing which you can use to screw the ground to the chassis, and the oem is just a wire cut at the end.

How do i connect those two together?

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!

for the radio, you should ground the wire directly to the chassis in a good spot where it will not get loose or rusty. do not use the oem ground wire.

hb pickup-no im just an amateur mechanic lol. i know enough to keep my car running and do some extra stuff on the side. for the exhaust, im pretty sure it will bolt together, but the problem is you run the risk of having the hanger spots not line up and possibly having the muffler stick out or in too much. only way to know is try it out. you may only need slight modifications, and welding new hangers does not cost much at a shop.

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!

You've opened the floodgates now, bro. But since i've seen you've broken into head unit faces, got an idea what to look for in a 12 year old Alpine that the far right lighting is way dim on? Prolly a light bulb of some sort out? Tips on getting in there? Any tiny springs gonna fly out or anything? It's a removable face type.

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!

take the face apart, i know on the older alpines, they usually just use bulb. the face comes apart pretty easily, just look for tiny screws on the rear or sides and remove those. you need a mini screwdriver "precision" kit for $5 at auto store. once screws are out, the face is still held together with clips. you need to gently pry apart the two halves. there are usually one or two springs for some of the buttons (like the detatch face button) that will fly out. and some plastic light guides. most of it will stick together tho on the top half like the light shields and buttons. the bulbs should be at the bottom. the bulbs are prolly soldered onto a board, so youre gonna have to go check the auto store to find a comparable size and brightness bulb. then hopefully with some limited soldering skills you will be able to swap the bulb. just get a good 30w iron with tip, copper desoldering braid to remove the old solder, and a roll of new solder to use with new bulb. oh also if your face has any round dials, you will need to pull those out first before taking the face apart.

the newer alpines all use tiny smt leds which are nearly impossible to change without a tiny solder tip and a magnifying glass lol. i was gonna change mine to blue but the leds are so small i can barely see the solder joints.

Thumbs down Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!

Hey gearbox you know how to paint your own car?! The guy that painted it for me works at a body shop and he did it as a side job but that m-effer rushed the job and its crappy as hell. He's gonna redo it soon but if he messes up again I'm just gonna give up on him, and he wont give me the money back I already tried. Keep in mind I paid 1600 for this job and he'll only redo it if I pay for the paint and do all the prep for that SOB. These local hawaiians are scammers and it sucks for us mainlanders =/...

If it still doesnt turn out right I dont have any other option but do it myself. If you have any tips that would be awesome.
