Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!
Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!
Hi Gearbox,
I recently removed an alternator on a 2003 civic so I could replace the timing belt, etc. Unfortunately, the electrical terminal snapped off the alternator. I'm not talking about one of the mounting bolts but the bolt or stud that connects the wire to the battery (I'm guessing).
Any suggestions on how to repair it? A rebuilt alternator costs about $150. I'm not sure if drilling and taping will work or if I must disassemble the alternator and make the repair from inside. Or is a rebuilt alternator the only option?

try and talk to a local machine shop, they may be able to repair it for you. they will prolly have to do some dismantle, but i dont think they would charge more than $25-40.

Okay since my first epic thread was deleted, we are gonna start fresh again here. This is for the newbies and anyone else who has a question about do-it-yourself mods and general civic info. I will do my best to try and answer, and other members are also welcome to post their input.
I hope the last few peeps who posted in the old thread will repost in this one. I did not get a chance to read all the questions before the thread went down. Lets get this thing rolling again!
Here is the original V1 thread archives if anyone wants to see it:

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!
How can I make my 2004 sedan lx, blue, about 1500pounds, 5.5feet, about 3 meters long, 1.7litre 4 cyclinder, round wheeled, head lighted, tail lighted 112,000km, freshley changed oil Honda Civic fly? Can I mount like a rrocket just underneath it so I can hop over other A$$hoLes in traffic? or can I just change my muffler to a bottle rocket and pump with one arm while im driving and than have a button that engages it and works like turbo? that would be pretty sick. Any way im a newbie so I dont know if this has been done before, im SURE it has and theres probablly a write up everywhere, but again im a noob so i wouldnt even know how to find that duhhhhhh

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!
Hi there,
I'm totally new to this - so new that this is my first ever car - and it burns a whole lotta oil. So the plan is to replace the engine. I believe that there's currently a stock B16A2 engine in there - the block just says Honda on it, but then I could be looking in the wrong place. I've done a few searches on here and haven't found anything that helps me out so I'm turning to you.
I was thinking of putting a V-tec in but have no idea what kind of extra work I would be making for myself so was hoping you might be able to tell me.
Any advice would be much appreciated, thanks!

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!
any pics of the engine? how much oil is it burning? i would try auto-rx.com treatment first before you junk the motor. our 92 accord was burning over a quart of oil each month and the engine was a mess inside. its now running much faster and getting better gas mileage. and so far ive barely added any oil for two weeks. i also switched it over to valvoline maxlife oil.

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!
when you open it, there are two tabs (one on each side) inside the box. pop them out by pushing from the outside inward. then the box will rotate down to the floor. it may be easier to take the bottom plastic tray out under the glove box instead. i cant remember exactly how, i took mine out a long time ago for similar reasons. i think its either some clips or screws and it really isnt needed. its the big plastic tray under the box where the passengers feet would normally hit. gives you some more legroom as well by removing it.
Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!
gearbox,
I have an idea of puting the EX's front and rear stabilizer bar + strut bar into my VP. I recalled that I used to see one member's in here has Civic DX DIY link in his signature. Do you remember that DIY link?
Thanks.
No 6 strut bar

No 5 rear

No 4 front

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!
i believe dezod.com sells the kit needed to add sway bars to your dx. may be easier than diy. for the dome light, those are different assemblies and you will have a hard time not only cutting the headliner to fit, but also attaching it and trying to run the wiring to make it work properly. i wouldnt do it.
Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!
Hey Gearbox, i'm interested in putting an in-car OBD system in my 05 Civic. Do you know much about this? What i had in mind was a 7" (about) tough screen that would have diagnostics software that i can hook up to my OBD ports in my car and monitor everything from there while on the road. Does this sound reasonable? I'm open to any other suggestions. Thanks a lot for your help!

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!
its much easier to just buy a diagnostic device that plugs into the OBD port and has its own display like the scangaugeII. i dont know too much other than you would need an lcd screen that fits in the dash and a laptop to run the software and display on screen.

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!
just get the morimoto mini projectors with h4 adapter. then you open the lights, remove the glare shield, pop in the projector using the adapter to align it, and voila, perfectly aimed hids with no cutting. if you diy with other oem projectors, you will have to aim them on the car most likely. i remember from old retrofits that the projectors need to be rotated a few degrees in some direction to be straight when installed. if you mount them flat to the reflector, beam will be crooked. and you need to drill a bigger hole in the reflector, and use hardware to attach the projector. my tycs were hell to retrofit cause i needed to make a whole new mounting system to the rear housing, and it still needs some adjustments.

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!
the 01+ civics get the special led clusters from the factory but they do not work for older civics. your only choices are buy the indiglo style overlay faces, change the stock bulbs to a different color (only works for warm colors like red/orange/yellow), or take apart the cluster and put custom leds in. im not sure how complicated this is or if those clusters can be opened and put back without breaking. i did a few 01-02 civics and it worked fine but not sure on the older ones if the needles would get messed. you can try some bulb replacements first since its easy to change from the back, maybe even led bulb but its hard to find good ones that last. or maybe make your own.

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!
well yeah technically. i was just meaning you can swap them all around for 01-05 year. the 03-05 vp still had the old style without tach.
Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!
Hey Gearbox,
I am brand new to the forum! My mother-in-law bumped my 03 metallic Black Lx into a concrete light fixture. I think just the plastic bumper is messed up and nothing else. I read that you recommend majestic honda. If I bought a new bumper from them, would it be in black or would I have to paint it black? I read your diy for replacing the bumper. It seems that you just unclip and unscrew all the fasteners/screws/bolts, pop off the old bumper and put the new one on. Any hints otherwise or is it that simple?
Thanks!

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!
it is pretty simple to change the bumper. however ordering a new oem bumper will not come painted. i would look on ebay either for used painted oem or new aftermarket painted. ive seen aftermarket painted bumper go for around $250 shipped with paint which is a great deal. my rear bumper is aftermarket and it looks/fits just like factory. if you go with the oem bumper and have it painted, most shops charge around $200 just for paint.
