Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!
Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!
I just finished installing my remote starter and I never appreciated the sheer amount of wires in a car until I finished it. I love electrical work and I have a good idea on water proofing. Are circuit boards my only option without being a complete pain? I'm unemployed right now so I'm looking for led diys right now. If it takes me 2 days a tube, I'm fine with it I just want to know if there is anyway easier then soldering and shrink tubing the connections. The pvc tube I'm getting, I'm drilling holes where the leds would go, using silicone to water proof it, and putting clips in the side. I just wat to do something, keep the price down, and learn some things along the way. All input is greatly appreciated and I know you love leds in your car and I am actually using a lot of your diys for my 6th gen. If I like the work I did I'm going to write a diy for it and cost is already down so yeah.

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!
I picked up a rear disc conversion and I have a sneaking suspicion that the calipers have been sitting for a while. I can't get the left caliper piston to push in so I can install new pads. It seems to be frozen in place. Is there any chance that when I put them on and hit the brakes the piston will unfreeze so it can be pushed in or should I just pick up new calipers?

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!
um wishful thinking lol. you may be able to just replace the piston but imo, its easier and more cost effective to just get a new caliper.
about the leds, i would check led section of hidplanet.com forums for diys and also the sale forums if you need a bunch of those superflux leds for pretty cheap. usually you can get a tube of 60 for $20, but they only have red, red-orange, blue, and amber for the oem approved bright ones.

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!
sealing headlights-use 3M windoweld butyl ribbon sealer comes in a roll at auto parts store.
ebay fogs-sorry thats a mess i dont deal with. instructions for oem fogs can be found here at www.handaaccessories.com and for the ebay fogs i recommend just making your own wire harness from a relay, fuse, and some wiring. use the harness trigger to control what turns em on or wire to a separate switch.
valve adjustment, you better be really good with a feeler gauge to want to diy this. have fun

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!
Hey Gearbox, so I ended up buying my ballast from yourhid and then the relay wiring harness from retrofit-source. Does my wiring picture below look right? And then the second picture with the spade connectors, do those spades just plug into my original H4 plug?
Thanks again for your help as always

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!
well the short red wire coming from the fuse goes to the + battery terminal, the other black wire coming out from the relay is prolly a ground. and the spades are power and ground i believe that go to the h4 plug. but im not exactly sure, thats a weird wire harness. i guess the red spade goes to the +12v headlight wire (red or red/yel) and the black spade goes to the LO wire (red/wht). but i cant see how everything is connected to the relay so im not exactly sure.

haha I don't need help yet. I just started my retro cuz I finally got all the parts but its going slowly cuz I gotta wait to get the correct bulbs sent to me.
Actually, what did you use to reseal your headlights? I know gearbox recommended the 3M windoweld stuff but I can't seem to find it in this area.

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!
^yea you cant. i searched everywhere.
go to autozone and look for "permatex BLACK SILICONE ADHESIVE SEALANT"

that stuff works great because:
1. silicone is organic, it wont corrode
2. its very very flexable
3. waterproof
4. (most important) its a BONDING+SEALING ADHESIVE, means that it'll glue ur lens/housing together. the regular "silicone II" stuff you find at homedepot seals, but donesnt bond to the plastic very well. and with alot of vibration while driving, it will start peeling and thus making room for water, and alot of moisture to go in.
note: yes you can reopen ur headlights later if you ever needa redo ur retro. just heat it up, and pry it open.

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!
oh yea, make sure you buy 2 tubes (they are 3oz each tube)
for best results when in use:
1. fill a pot with water
2. put the two tubes in the water, turn the stove on.
3. let the water boil and heat up the silicone in there for 15mins
4. take the first tube out and use it on ur first headlight
NOTE: one tube = one headlight. it is more than enough, make sure you put it on GENEROUSLY.... when you close it up, it should come out just a lil:

5. tape ur headlights up with painters tape, to pressure hold the lens to the housing

let the silicone dry. takes 24hrs. then take the tape off and u are rdy for the install!
here is a sneak peak to my "temporary retrofit" ill post it up later
btw, these use to be my sonars

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!
wear some latex gloves.
take out the lens and spray them with windex.
then use dish washer soap (excellent degreaser) and wash the lens well, and rise them off with DISTILLED water. if u dont hav distilled water, DRINKING water or filter water is ok...but they have minerals in them, but it wont hurt the lens. but distilled water is highly suggested.

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!
i sold the retro already, felt bad for blinding everyone all the time. but they were nice. too bad it looks like usps lost em tho
im back to ebay replica oem lights which actually have decent output when aimed properly and using philips XP bulbs.
ground wires are easy, just replace the stock ones with 4 gauge stereo ground wire you can get from best buy or other stereo shops.

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!
lower control arms i havent done, but seems like it shouldnt be too hard. you need alignment after youre done tho.
tsx shields, use hi temp black paint and sand the shields a bit first. dont forget to let them dry for a bit and then bake them before assembling. otherwise the heat from the hid bulb will cause the paint to cure and you will get haze on the inside of the lens.

make sure you buy some "exhaust ceramic paint" (autozone has them) because they can stand high temps. and yes, he does get hot as hell near the bulb.

Re: Ask Me About DIY Stuff V2!
This is a weird request and I am in no hurry to get it but can someone give me some measurements of where the holes for the rear sway brackets are? I need to know how far apart they are and how far up or down the holes need to be drilled.
