First post! And.. issue. My 1995 Honda Civic..
Re: First post! And.. issue. My 1995 Honda Civic..
Question: Should Red Loc-Tite be going on threads that have been remedied to reliable service? (Damn I sound like I know what I'm talking about ther)
Re: First post! And.. issue. My 1995 Honda Civic..
I am still kind of an idiot. I thought there was a difference between screwing in a bolt I am about to cut (in 4 places? One on each side?) vs actually taping a bolt hole...
I'm about to videodocument in a second after I clean this one up a bit..

Slicing up a bolt is for when you don't have the right tool.

Tracing the threads with a tap straightens them better than a bolt can. Be gentle, you are using a hard steel bolt or tap up against soft aluminum. make sure all shavings and debree are clear before torquing.

the whole point of all of this is to get the threads straight, clean and smooth so that when you torque the bolts they do not catch on debre or imperfections and give a false torque value.

Alright.. There are TWO videos here. And they aren't all "moving around," as some of mine were.
I urge you to watch this, as it may be a game-changer.. At least for me, I feel it is...

Is that a back to the future joke? My nick name is Marty, that is why I have that screen name.
I did a head on the same engine and thought they where stretch, maybe i can't remember so good. But if they are, make sure you get new ones, or you may get improper torque values as well.
Props for attacking such a large project, that car looks like it has seem some miles.

And I LOVED the movie! 30 years.... this week....Yes, I am uploading "play by play."
I have a Heli-Coil coming in the mail, and that tap/die set. ARE there advantages to using that vs cutting a bolt?

To anyone followjng... I want to get those holes ready for the screws today. Because, then, I SHOULD be able to put the head on.. TODAY.
I have a ton of MMO to substitute for transmission fluid and can run down and clean "mostly those two" .. The other holes really do seem fit.
Any tips?

Post 256 the bolt you show first appears to have a wad of aluminum stuck in the threads.....
Looks like galling of the threads...Was it tight to turn most of the way out as you were removing it?
Is this the bolt that was removed from the center front hole?
And the other bolt came out of the hole in the corner at cyl. 4?

Did I miss something? Why are you filing the side of the head bolt flat?
Harp? Cool.

I am still copiously cleaning those two holes, I know that most of the funky color is the cleaners I sprayed in, but, they are getting super clean. Im letting those two holes soak in MMO overnight.
The head is very close to getting back on, and the idiot helper DESTROYED the BRAND NEW Head Gasket I bought.. Starting to think these acts were intientional (he cost me $90 on a hard to find good conditin part by setting it on fire in the engine on the other one) so he is gone.
