Manual vs Auto
Re: Manual vs Auto
I'm still pretty new to manual so maybe I can't speak accurately but on my civic it's okay. 2005 LX-G sedan.
Maybe my foot is still a little heavy but I find myself clutching on 2nd as well. Things don't start going until 3rd. 5th does highway (120km/h) at about 3000 rpm which isn't bad but considering how it feels in comparison to slower speeds it would be nice to have a sixth gear or at least change the first two.
I would really like to see some more consistency with how the engine feels as I can't feel it at all when idling. Maybe the body is too light which is why I get that.
Overall though, you can't beat the price and despite having (what I would say is) gears set for grandmas who drive on the highway at exactly 100km/h it is still kind of fun to drive. I'm actually learning a lot on this civic and I'm glad I bought it.
Now when I get a GT2 I'll be ready for it. :P

Re: Manual vs Auto
Manual here, love every minute of driving it!
I can feel the road, I'm in total control of the car
I can downshift to slow down/double clutch/heel-toe.
And it just gives me something to do while I'm driving, I'd get soo bored if I had an Auto. I have nothin against them, but I just have a lot more fun driving a manual
Yea I get caught up in traffic sometimes but those reason above totally outweigh the traffic.
Manual till I can't work a clutch anymore!

I wanted to get a manual but decided to go with automatic transmission, there is too much stops and reg lights where I live, like this.. I can drive like a pensioner/retired

Re: Manual vs Auto
with the way autos are outperforming manuals and coming with 7-speed paddle shifting, idk. eventually i think autos will keep improving and take over even on cheap cars. they are not the crappy slushbox versions that came on our civics anymore. and now autos are getting better mpg too while robbing less hp and shifting faster than any human.

Re: Manual vs Auto
Ferraris and Lambos don't come with manuals anymore because "no human could match the speed and percision of their new automatic double clutch transmissions" Straight from the horses mouth.
Re: Manual vs Auto
I'm auto.
Mostly becuase of where I live. If anyone has been to Seattle you will know that there are hills out the *** here. Its like they built the city on nothing but hills. I was with a friend who has a scion and its a stick and he has been driving stick all his life but he stalls out sometimes on these hills we got here......So yeah..I"m loving my auto...

Wow... after two years, a ten year old post has been revived! Live! LIIIIIIIIIVE!!!!!!!!!
Manual ftw because seriously, what are you going to do with your non-driving hand?

Re: Manual vs Auto
Learned to drive on my dad's automatic domestic, then bought a manual civic when I started working. Took some time to learn it though, the stop-and-go traffic actually helped me with learning how to drive a stick.
It is quite fun to shift from 2nd to 3rd gear while going at 60km/hr, you can feel the car giving immediate anticipation as the engine roars like a beast. Or downshifting to 3rd at 60km/hr and feel this reactive force on the car and your body. It feels different than braking, more internal if you may.
Another perk is that girls seems to be more interested in manuals than autos. Maybe cuz their dads have been driving them around in an auto and a manual is something new. I tried to drive and have a friend in the passenger seat to shift gears for me, it was quite scary, instead of 3rd she put it in 5th. Almost stalled cuz I had to slow down for a speed bump.
Autos definitely feel smoother though. Less jerky, perfect if you have a full mug of coffee, I'd spilled many times while driving this manual civic. But I'd rather wanna have the car to react to my shifts however, maybe cuz I'm a guy and I want control.
Would I go back to auto, probably not, or not until I get old enough and can't work the clutch anymore.
