Re: Manual vs Auto
Manual for 1 year and counting. Drove an automatic for 5 years and got bored. I like rowing my own gears, regardless of traffic. I like double-clutching, rev-matching and all that good stuff. Still can't heel toe though
. I enjoy driving and being able to tell my car when to shift makes it even more enjoyable.

I have a manual 2009 Honda Civic LX, in Polished Metal Metallic. I love it cause it's alot faster and you have more control over your vehicle than an automatic. I used to drive an automatic honda, but I switched to a Manual to feel the difference. I don't ever think that I'll ever get a vehicle that has automatic transmission again. I am loving my manual honda day after day even through heavy traffic. I can rely on it when I need to get out of a traffic lane fast.
Would love to hear what other people have to say about a manual vs auto honda.
Hope to hear from everybody.

Re: Manual vs Auto
Regarding that comment "u know the fastest cars are all pretty much auto? F1 cars, high end ferrari, GT-R, veyron, IS-F, LF-A...etc". I think if somebody can afford one of these cars above, it should have only a manual transmission, cause then it would be a major waste of a car to be an automatic. I used to have a friend who wrote articles for Road and Track and he used to tell me that if somebody decides to buy a fast car like a Ferarri, a Jaguar, a Lotus, or some high end vehicle, it should have a manual transmission cause then you'd be able to feel the road better and be more in control of your own vehicle and you'll be able to enjoy it more than buying it with an automatic transmission. That's what I think.

Re: Manual vs Auto
Automatic transmissions have come a long way though in terms of performance and economy. If I worked all my life and made a good living, I'd want an exotic A manual for those is and would be nice, but I think Ferrari, or Lamborghini is axing off their manuals for track times and other reasons I can't remember. Why shouldn't a hard worker be able to get the car he/she wants? I will probably drive manuals now until my left leg can't take it anymore.
Maybe because fewer people drive manual and they only produce a very small number of them? They need to make money somehow. There was an article on Autoblog about it some time ago.

Re: Manual vs Auto
A conventional automatic is largely hydraulically controlled (rather than electronic), horrifically complex, and often have more than 6 clutches or clutch bands. Shift times are slow and you have no way of selecting the correct gear on a corner exit for high-performance driving.
That being said, automatic boxes have come a long way recently and nowadays have plenty of gears (more than 4), and can easily achieve comparable fuel efficiencies to manuals. "Tiptronic" automatics even let you select gears, although I've driven some and they are still slow to respond and more of a gimmick - if you want manual control, get a real manual.
Re: Manual vs Auto
Nobody is forcing you to choose. And a lot of folks enjoy a third pedal because you pretty much have complete control over your vehicle. They're less complicated too. But you're free to choose whatever, no need to get all antsy about it.
Re: Manual vs Auto
i've had 2 cars,
-95 neon sport coupe, 3 speed auto,
-95 neon sport coupe, 5 speed
same exact car, and i have to say, i wouldn't ever go back.
i get almost 10 more miles to a gallon,
significantly better 1/4 times
ALOT funner to drive.
i actually look for reasons to go drive now, it's just fun.
there's nothing more satisfying in a car than shifting into 2nd and chirping! (don't criticize me....you know who you are.....)

Re: Manual vs Auto
I think the last time I chirped my tires was when I was learning how to drive standard.
. That was pretty.....interesting to say the least. But yeah. I love driving to and from work now. And living in a hilly area, I use engine braking to help not burn out my brakes. I just throw it in 3rd or 4th and cruise down the hill. It's funny watching people constantly tap their brakes. Although that's probably just bad habits since I never rode my brakes in my auto either.

my mom drives a kia spectra, like a 07 i think? she bought it new.
she put 151000 miles on it before she did any kind of a tune up....that means spark plugs, wires, brakes, timing belt, you get the picture.
the mechanic at the dealer said that it looked like the brakes were recently replaced. but my dad on the other hand has to replace brake shoes every 6 months sometimes.lol
(parents are divorced btw.lol)
Re: Manual vs Auto
Manual all the way. Autos are so boring and hate it when you get in one and try to reach for a clutch
. The only thing I like autos for is going to the beach on vacations cause dont like pushing the clutch in every split second.

. For real. I've done that sooooo many times when I go to work on my girlfriend's car. Sometimes if I go to drive it and I need to stop suddenly, I'll clutch in and try to knock the car into neutral
. Re: Manual vs Auto
<---I own a manual civic (real fun especially when you peel out in second with shi++y-tread tires)
Re: Manual vs Auto
Double clutching, from what I've learned, is basically doing the work of the syncros. You proceed to shift(clutch in. Derp), but instead of going straight into the next gear, you put it in neutral, blip the throttle to rev match your next gear(clutch in again), and proceed with the to shift. If done correctly, the shifter will literally get sucked into the gate
. On modern cars, you really don't need to do it though unless your synchros are fubar. I'm sure I left something out of that whole explanation though, kinda tired.

Re: Manual vs Auto
Manual all the way, unless you're getting into really high performance applications, then automatic is the way to go now. Still, nothing beats a high performance car with a stick because you always have control.
Re: Manual vs Auto
Iv had slow cars and really fast cars auto and manual and im manual allllllllday. never goin back to auto unless i get to the piont where i dont have a choice. You have way more control over your car, it only gets boring if you let it. I just got a civic for a second daily/project cus i get like 35+ mpg and its slowwww but its 5 speed and i have fun with that little thing all day
and with that fastest car thing being auto i agree with pretty much piontless to have one of the fast expensive cars and get it auto.
