why is this even a discussion. if you cannot drive a stick you should be legally banned for the rest of your life from racing or even calling yourself a racer!

how easy / difficult might it be to swap tranny's? i mean would it be worth it ....i bet you could trade tranny for tranny at a junkyard ...seeing as that a auto is worth more. any input?

(refering to my post about living in NYC with an auto tranny).

It's not about fuel economy, it's about contstant stop-n-go city driving. I figure a manual would quickly get boring.

yall guys dont know, both styles of transmission have + and - to them

in terms of racing (and ill keep this short)

manual = road course, autox
drag = auto owns drag, hands down.

i might have to agree with ngophat. auto is good for drag cuz of no mishifting. there only bad thing is the longer gears on auto.

btw, has anyone ever seen a car with the same gearing in auto and manual?

I think manual is best for small cars and automatic is best for big cars and trucks. My first two cars were automatics and I'd be falling asleep while driving. Now my Civic is a manual and I'll never buy a big car or an automatic again. Everyone who says they are lazy to shift should have bought a Cavalier. And for that matter, the way some of the civics on this site look with 18" rims and two thousand pound speaker boxes, you all should have bought Cavaliers too.

If the autos are so great in dragracing, why do they run over second slower in the quarter mile than the manual civic? You need to be a little more clear about that in that an auto is great if you have the torque converter tightend and the final drive gear shortened or a complete custom tranny. Stock for stock though, in our civics, the manuals kill the autos autoX, road course or drag, just go look up some time slips on this site.

As for a car with the same gearing ratio, that really isn't fair. An auto tranny eat up around 20% of the power made by the engine where as a manual eats only about 15% on average, so you see the manual will be able to get more power to the tires if all else is equal. But a auto is geared a little higher because when the torque converter tightens, it has to be able to disappate that engergy with out spinning the tire, thus if you tighten your torque converter on an auto you have a better chance against the manuals.
