its a combination. ur differential affects the final drive ratio. the final drive ratio is a combination of the gearing in ur differential and ur transmission.

no, the final drive ratio gear is a COMPLETELY seperate gear from the gears in your transmission. in layman's terms, it's basically the gear that seperates your drive shaft from the wheels.

big jim is correct. when people modify their car for quicker gearing (you've heard the term, putting in aftermarket gears) they simply change the FD. (so technically they are only putting in one gear) it's much cheaper and more effective to simply change the FD. for example, I can get an aftermarket FD gear of 4.44 or 4.77 for my S2000. it doesn't touch the transmission and simply changes the gear located in the diff. likewise, if you wanted to change your transmission gearing for some reason, you could do so, and your FD could remain the same.

either put on smaller tires, or change your FD gear.

right, but doesnt the differential and ur tranmsission combine to produce ur final gearing that is considered when racing?
