issues with 16 inch rims on 01 civic DX?

Hey all,

Very excited to get my first set of wheels and tires but I am a little concerned about the fitment...

I've been looking at gallerys pictures of people with 16 inch wheels which all of which are using offset of either +38 - +42 most of the decent wheels which I actually want:

1. 16x7 +38 Vors SP1 Hyperblack with a Machined Lip https://www.vorswheels.com/products/sp1
2. 16x7 +35 ARC AR4

but when im calculating the tires on my car right now, from top of tire to bottom its like 24 inchs? but im using stock wheels 14 inch (measured) and i believe they are on 185 OEM sizing tires so im not sure if im measuring correctly

does anyone have similiar rims and will I run into rubbing and tire touching the wheel well/fender and will I need to do a fender pull/roll?

ive measured currently the distance from top of the fender on the side (as the offset will at least be touching on the very edge) is around 3.5 inches so if i get 16s thats 2 immediately and will I be able to even drop lower my car with coilovers only a 1.3 inch MAX without touching but the overall ride height is still high and not the "lowered" look im looking for?

is the only way to acheive this is to go with a more tucked wheel fitment so the whole wheel can sit more inside with clearance to top for more lower drop ride height or should I just get a 15x7 instead? but the 15 wheel size looks so small

please let me know thanks!

Re: issues with 16 inch rims on 01 civic DX?

or maybe I didn't take into account the front lip I will be adding which will give more lowered look but technically ride height is barely going to be able to drop more than 1 inch which I am fine with but just making sure this analyzing is correct

Re: issues with 16 inch rims on 01 civic DX?

Also I am trying to stay within the OEM driving diameter apparently 16 in wheels should be either 195 or 205? would I be able to run the 16x7 +38 on a 185 and does "stretching" in this case vertically and width be able to help with the overall ride height and rubbing/touching top clearance issues if the 7 inch will be essentially wider which will cause the touching/rubbing

I kind of do want to go with a more flush look but tbh if its tucked in SLIGHTLY which is NEARLY flush im ok IF i am able to maintain a lower ride height LOOK not just the ride height drop because the overall larger wheels+tires will raise the ride height?

Im slightly uncertain about this as I used the: https://www.civicforums.com/forums/t...calculator.php

and results from

1. 14x5.5 185/40/14 to a 16x7 +38 with 205/45/16 is
  • Inner Clearance: 12.05mm less
  • Outer Position: extend by 26.05mm 2.6 CM? wont it go from 5.5 to 7 inches naturally? sticking more out especially more with the +38 instead of OEM +45?
  • Diameter difference: 1.9" (8.47%) (meaning this is the MAX drop?) but this definitely has tucking/poking into account

Re: issues with 16 inch rims on 01 civic DX?

top menu, tools -> Tire Rim calculator

final OD will change depending on tires you use.
7" wide OK
off-set 38-44 OK
205/45 section height is too low, keep to original tires OD or speedo will be off by too much

Re: issues with 16 inch rims on 01 civic DX?

what do you mean section height is too low? i checked the OEM stat page for 16 inch on 7th gen civics they say either 195 or 205 right?

what would be the best recommendations or options/routes to take where I dont have to give up 16x7 looks becuase I dont want too tucked, and especially I do really want the deep dish or bigger lip chrome wheels, while also being able to drop a bit lower

so was my assessment correct? going from 14 inch to 16 inch will raise the ride height by alot resulting in me not being able to lower the car ride height as much? or will I have to go the 15 inch route ultimately (which ive seen alot of people running) to get a more lowered look?

or will I be able to run 16x7 +38 and either pull/roll fenders to lower more? or this overall shouldnt be an issue with 16x7 +38

would be helpful if people with many setups could share some of their setups!

Re: issues with 16 inch rims on 01 civic DX?

by section height do you mean the clearance from top of tire to edge of fender? or meaning it will stretch with 205/45 on a 16x7 +38?

Re: issues with 16 inch rims on 01 civic DX?

OH OK lol so the perfect would just be to get 195 instead that way I can achieve both so it will be just tucked but "nearly" flush where it should be (not nearly-flush outside in terms of poked)

im going to be ordering these REAL soon I CANT WAIT LOOKS SO GOOD

but honestly do most people or even yourself if you got a 16x7 be able to drop it lower? im not trying to slam it but slightly off the ground pretty much hopefully I mean I could settle for a little higher ride height just gotta find nice side skirts and add 2 front lips

Re: issues with 16 inch rims on 01 civic DX?

ok so if i go with the 16x7 +38 on a 195 but what would be better is the side wall height from inner wheel up to top of tire? or vice versa

so 195/45 is 45% of how much the wheel will cover and stretch the bottom part of the tire? so essentially if I do go lower and will rub i should get a higher or more ratio so 195/50? or less like 195/40?

Re: issues with 16 inch rims on 01 civic DX?

195/45 is even smaller OD, your speedo will be way off

Use
the
tire
calculator

you need to match closely the OD of the 185/70R14 stock tires

Re: issues with 16 inch rims on 01 civic DX?

im seeing this reference:

https://www.fitmentindustries.com/wh...cing-coilovers

Rota Slipstreams 16x7 +40 | GT Radial SX2 205/50 | D2 Racing Coilovers

hes nearly flush no rubbing no mods,

im going to be installing Tein coilovers hope its similar but I shouldnt run into brake/strut issues

ok so im assuming 205/50 or 55 should be good im seeing people with 16x7 using those but some others do have 205/40-45

in canada... I would recommend stopping at around 1" drop...

1" drop, stock 185/65R15 tires

When I put on the 205/55R16, the tires are slightly bigger and fills the wheel wells better, but at 70MPH on the speedo, I am like 74~75 actual MPH

Re: issues with 16 inch rims on 01 civic DX?

haha great reference photo definitely a speed racer! haha

dude thats perfect look right there i mean i was hoping to go lower slightly more than your 2nd photo but yes I am in Toronto and there's heavy snow which is another concern but my overall problem is with the 2 inch diameter for wheels im technically now sitting higher right? lol so even if i rub im not even that low on the ground. but tbh i wasnt looking to go too low.

prob want to be around 1-1.5 inch off the ground

Re: issues with 16 inch rims on 01 civic DX?

well i guess the wheels arent bad for what i want and its less than $1000 for a set. maybe I can try a shops' tires and wheels to see the feel for it i kinda do want to go a little lower...maybe i should just get 15x8 and go for a lower wide stance which I do like as well

i jsut feel like 15s might look too small which for my taste, can compensate with wider stance and lower

Re: issues with 16 inch rims on 01 civic DX?

rim size does not matter, depends on the tires you put... rim width, off-set matter to the car model (you are OK on this, so the remaining factors are drop and tire OD)

on your 16's what was the offset? and was yours more tucked or flush? will my 16x7 +38 be more inside the well or more flush where I will have troubles lowering it more than 1'' ?

the problem is ground clearance.
smaller OD tires and more drop means you might be stuck in a parking lot with snow

you can fill the fenders with bigger tires, but it will increase the ground clearance
smaller OD tires will reduce ground clearance but increase fender gap

Re: issues with 16 inch rims on 01 civic DX?

true probably not worth to risk becuase its like 100% there will be days with like a foot of snow. but hopefully the Teins can give me smaller increments of drops so i can get it just right even like a .1-.3 more drop would look so much better and feel too sitting lower

dropping the car will also need rear camber correction, AKA rear adjustable upper control arms. (see link in my signature)
