For the ignition timing you need a timing light. There's videos on youtube or use the factory manual
got it. Found a video. I think I have a timing light laying around somewhere. I also have the original sensors I pulled off the engine. Maybe I can try to use the old ones as there was no issue prior to the engine failure.
Buy an oem sensor. Ignition timing might need to be adjusted
I put the original sensor back on as it was OEM and the fans are good again. I can’t seem to get the timing right. Followed the instructions. Jumped the connector near ECM for base timing and used the timing light to adjust distributor after the car warmed up. I’m fully maxed on the distributor towards advanced timing but I need to go further to make it to the middle mark. Any ideas? Maybe the machine shop put timing belt off a tooth?
Edit: I plugged in my scan tool and saw IGN advance is sitting at 12* at idle after engine is warmed up. Is this the correct number. I see conflicting information. Some are saying 12* and some say 16*
That's one of the problems with the aftermarket distributors. You can try enlarging the holes but i would just grab a oe distributor from the junkyard
ok I’ll take a look and see if I can locate one nearby. I’m just concerned since I have pictures from before of my
engine and the distributor bolts were centered where it bolts up. Just trying to figure out what the difference is, before and after the engine rebuild.

ok I ended up picking up an OEM Honda distributor from LKQ. The cap says Honda on it at least. Put it in and like you say the adjustment was better. At least I’m not making out too fully advanced at this point. On to the next issue I just found 😭
Saw an oil puddle on the ground so I investigated. Followed the drip to the brand new oil pump. The machine shop MISSED putting one of the bolts where the gasket seals the pump. (See picture) you think if I can grab a bolt from either the dealer or junkyard I can install the bolt in hopes that it seals it up?
Definitely worth trying to put a bolt in, or if a shop did the work take it back to them and have them fix it
added bolt but seems leak was coming from the torq plug I tightened the plug all the way and seems to have stopped the leak.
final question.. does that plug need any sort of sealant or will tightening the bolt be enough to seal the hole and prevent it from wiggling loose over time?
So back again. I had a feeling something wasn’t right about this engine. Was hearing a nasty top end noise. Took off the valve cover today. Was missing a nut on cylinder 3 intake side and valves were completely off.
.014 inch on exhaust side and .010 inch on intake side plus the missing nut.
anyways went ahead and adjusted exhaust to .010” and intake to .08” and of course added a nut from junkyard and it now runs beautifully.
Oof, someone may have attempted a valve adjustment and forgot to tighten everything
the engine was completely rebuilt top and bottom. The service included complete valve job and valve adjustment. Maybe they started the adjustment but got distracted halfway through. Some of the valves were correct but majority were way off and the missing nut.
Disappointed since they said the engine was ready to drop in without any problems.
