Head gasket = P0336 ?????

only code i got is p0336. puts it into limp mode. Excessive cooling system pressure blew cap off last night. Could i have leaking head gasket ??? compression is good in all cylinders, but how did that pressure get into cooling system? exhaust gases?
i get a little bit of sputtering from engine at 2300 rpms. Any help is appreciated.

Excess coolant through the overflow reservoir? That’s a bad head gasket.

Do a block test on it. Tester is a free rental at parts store and fluid is $10. If the blue test fluid turns green or yellow then exhaust gases are entering the coolant. However, a block test doesn't rule out every type of head gasket breach.
Compressed air 150 psi into one cylinder at a time at top dead center with the radiator cap off to inspect for air bubbles is probably the best test for head gasket breaches. Chezboat stated the best symptom to look for. That symptom can also be caused by a bad radiator cap in an open style coolant system.

I generally start with a block test as it cheap and easy to do and is accurate when exhaust gases are in the coolant.

Not surprising about an aftermarket part not working. There's a lot of garbage parts nowadays that are a quarter of the price of genuine OEM but don't work correctly or last long.

How did a crank sensor solve excessive coolant in the overflow reservoir issue?
