High RPMs?
High RPMs?
What rpms is normal on a 2004 Honda Civic LX? Got this car in March and my husband swears that the rpms are higher than normal. It's an automatic. At 60 mph the rpms were 2500-2700. You hit the gas to accelerate and it spiked to 3500-4000. It is running fine, no skipping, no noise, nothing. It idles fine, its idling at 700. Is it normal? My husband is thinking it's the transmission.
We have 2 different size tires and I was told that could be it. On the driver's side we have 185 and on the passenger it's 195. Could that be it? I didn't think it would affect anything.

Re: High RPMs?
tire size does affect, tire OD impacts number of revs vs distance run. The differential is constantly thinking it is cornering.
if you have rear tires that are either 185 or 195, swap them and make both front tires same and see if it improves.
If not, auto trans on those cars (majority of them happens on 2001-2003 cars, rarely but happens sometime for the 04-05) start slipping the transmission and engine revs go up but speed does not change.

Re: High RPMs?
2500ish sounds about right, to be honest. I had an 02 EX (shorter gears = higher RPM for a given speed) and, with a manual transmission was at about 3k at 60mph in 5th gear.
edit: found an old post that kinda confirms 2500 at 60 (albeit on an EX automatic)

edit 2: for you OG's out there (Sandro) idk why I thought Kenny had a manual tranny.

Would that be the same for a automatic? We have the 1.7 4 cylinder.
