Is This Bad?...some advice...sorta new
hey....well, i'm a little new to some things, but i'm learning more every day, so here's the deal. I know my way around a Honda very well, I'm on my 2nd honda so far, and i drive them pretty lightly. On my 2k1 Civic (auto), i let it shift at 3,000 or maybe 3200 rpm. At what point do high rpm's hurt the car? Maybe once in two weeks, i'll take it to a little over 4,000. Someone gimme the skinny on the rpm deal. I hear its bad to hit em high, and then i hear that its ok.....i change the oil at 2700-3000 miles religiously and i have an auto EX model, if that helps any...

hitting high rpms isn't bad for your car at all. the point where it is bad is the point where most rev limiters kick in, to keep you from f-ing up your car. the only things that shifting at a higher engine speed will do is increase noise and cut down on your gas mileage, especially with the VTEC on the EX. shifting at 2000-3000 rpm, i'm surprised you're getting anywhere.

haha....well it gets worse...my dad shifts his 91 Accord 5speed at 2500 EVERY time....arghh...old guys....well, i heard that hitting high rpm's can cause the valves to click after awhile. I wasn't sure if that applied to my car or not. My friend shifts his turbo mr2 at 5 and 6000 sometimes to let the turbo do its work, and it seems alright.

Hondas get their peak power at high RPM's
It won't hurt your car to shift at higher RPM's as long as its not over redline or like AFlyer said and the rev limiter kicks in
Plus it sounds good when you have an Intake and rev it high

i dont know how the hell you shift since you stated that its an auto
your ecu in the honda should be able to do the work and it doesnt really matter in your auto because the computer does all tha shietz for you

sorry....i should have cleared up the 'shifting' thing.....with my auto, i will keep the gas down in third gear getting on the highway just to i can merge in quickly, or sometimes i'll try mash the gas in 4th so it goes back into 3rd when a semi doesn't wanna let me in.....when that happens it jumps to 4,000 or 4,500....so is the high rpm bad or damaging?......yeah i'm startin to regret the auto. I miss my 91 accord 5 speed that my dad took back from me.

yeah, it is possible to control the shift points to an extent in an auto, you just have to know your car. all autos will do that, when you mash the pedal, it will downshift for you. this is known as "passing gear" and gives your car the power that you need to pass someone or whatever. i hardly ever look at the tach when i'm driving. i just shift based on engine noise. if i'm pushing it off the line or whatever i'll glance to see where the needle's at, but normally i just do it by feel. 5 speeds rule, 6 speeds are better, and the only time i will drive an auto is if in emergency or i have 4 kids and a minivan.

shawn02, why are you posting the same exact question in two separate forums?? that's ridiculous! keep the questions to the applicable forum, and don't post the same thing to two
Honda motors are high revving motors...
Since you like to shift at lower rpms, you aren't utilizing VTEC, the major reason that people like us buy EX's instead of LX's...
So, no it won't hurt your car to hit higher rpms...
When I'm doing 80 on the highway, the car is revving at like 3700-3800 rpm's... make you feel better..?

Unless you are power shifting or constantly dumping the clutch, or just plain beating the hell out of your ride, it is very hard to kill your motor with the preset rev-limiter. One thing that WILL destroy a motor is if the guy I quoted decides to take his dads car out and gets near the red stuff too often he might blow a head gasket or worse, because all the time that his dad has been driving and shifting at such a low point it makes carbon build up alot faster on the piston heads, causing a higher compression ratio, and if carbon build up is too great expect a nice sized repair bill
hey Shawn, the only thing that will harm your car is to shift to D3 at high speed, "down-shifting" by mashing your gas will bring bring your gear down, but as soon as you hit the redline it will shift back up, don't worry, you have an auto, it will do all the shifting for you
