Re: The ultimate DX/LX header/exhaust FAQ

You keep saying "ex head" Your ex head and lx head and dx head all have the same bolt pattern, so you dont need to change the head to change the manifold that bolts to it. I think your also getting the parts mixed up a little- you cant weld a cat onto a header... well, I guess you could, but that would just be stupid and it would probably be an inch from the pavement so you couldnt run a cat back. Here is how the parts go:

Engine Head> header (exhaust manifold)> Downpipe with cat converter in it (this is one piece of pipe with flanges on either side and the cat in the center [if you cant get a hold of an OEM downpipe with cat, get the Random Tech pipe, OR get a test pipe and a universal weld-in cat], then your cat back exhaust system.

Re: The ultimate DX/LX header/exhaust FAQ

So OBX header > Random Tech downpipe (I think this is the right one *) > OBX catback

* http://shopping.lightningmotorsports...cat=664&page=1

Ok, that would work but I would like to avoid having the CEL on if possible, so looks like I should get a test pipe w/ a weld in cat
I'm assuming these universal cats have O2 sensor positions...right?

Anybody know any good websites for downpipes or universal cats?

Do any local places like Auto Zone or Advance Auto carry them?

What would the disadvantages of the Random Tech test pipe....besides the CEL?
Would I be able to smell the exhaust real bad?
Would it be super loud?

Get a test pipe and weld in an universal cat if you want, or pick up the RT pipe that already has it welded in for you and will bolt right up to your exhaust with no bullshit

I'm assuming these universal cats have O2 sensor positions...right?
you'd have to take that issue up with your test pipe. The weld in cats are just a blob of catalyst that is placed somewhere in the length of the pipe, no O2 sensors actually screw into it- there are two that need to be in the exhaust stream, one before the cat and one after.

Anybody know any good websites for downpipes or universal cats?
Just search... theres bunches of websites. Search "Random tech" + the model year of your car... you'll get all your answers there.

Do any local places like Auto Zone or Advance Auto carry them?
they will sell universal cats most likely, yes

What would the disadvantages of the Random Tech test pipe....besides the CEL?
the RT pipe is not a test pipe... a test pipe is just a pipe WITHOUT a cat, the RT pipe has a cat... and with that cat, you wont need to worry about tricking your 2ndary exhaust sensor, which may or may not work and will probably give you several cels

Would I be able to smell the exhaust real bad?
with just a test pipe, yes... with the RT pipe, no
Would it be super loud?
with a test pipe yes, with stock no, the RT will be somewhere inbetween with a health exhaust note
Hope that helped.

Re: The ultimate DX/LX header/exhaust FAQ

Yes sir, it did!
thanks again for all the help

Also it says it will illuminate the CEL and it's a not for highway use....you sure it has a cat in it?

That one is made by Skunk2 and not RT
I don't think it's the right one

I assume the one I need is something like this http://shopping.lightningmotorsports...cat=457&page=2

that would work great, but I'm pretty sure the pipe diameter on my car is 2.25 inch and that one is 2.5 inch....

So will a testpipe will replace a downpipe?

This is the header I was looking at getting
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/OBX-4...4369QQtcZphoto

Is that a downpipe I see there included, or is it the header just in two pieces to make it easier to install?

Re: The ultimate DX/LX header/exhaust FAQ

That first link is for a test pipe... aka no cat.

That second link is what you need, or at least the type of product you need (did you say you had a 6th gen or 7th gen?). Here is a list of the part numbers of RT products that are downpipes with cats: http://www.randomtechnology.com/honda.html

That header is a race header, a 4-2-1, which will make it so you cant run the RT downpipe... or at least that is how it is on the 7th gen. I'm not sure exactly how your exhaust system looks on the 6th gen- get pics of the ex header and front part of the exhaust and I can tell you. But on race headers they usually bolt right up to the begining of the cat back.

Re: The ultimate DX/LX header/exhaust FAQ

Ok, I think I'm going to buy that header and the cat back

I'll order a cat if I need it, and if the header bolts directly to the catback, then so be it

thanks again for everything, Triz

Re: The ultimate DX/LX header/exhaust FAQ

Triz, I got the catback and header

It appears that the OBX header and catback leave room for a cat. converter

I'm assuming you reccomend the Random Tech cat?

Re: The ultimate DX/LX header/exhaust FAQ

Yeah, go with the random tech cat if you want a higher flowing downpipe and cat then the stock one and dont want to pollute the world without running one. In fact, the RT pipe will flow just as good as running catless, without the added harmful effects on the environment. Pick it up

Re: The ultimate DX/LX header/exhaust FAQ

Ok, so they offer an "installation kit" with the catalytic converter
I'm assuming this is the bolts I need to install it

Also, what size 02 extender cable would be appropriate?
I'm guessing 24 inch would be plenty, but car is an LX, so they stock cat position was pretty close...

No, i live in florida we don't have emission testing. I will be keeping the stock muffler, and don't really want a loud exhaust. Will this be possible without the cat?

If your cat failed, then take it to honda- it has an extended warranty and should be replaced for free.

Yea bro, but no worries I had the muffler shop custom do it without messing up with my headers or censors. So I'm running the new catback perfectly!

Re: The ultimate DX/LX header/exhaust FAQ

Triz - got the header, cat and catback on.
It went pretty well, BUT there was about an inch and a half gap I had fudge
This fudging caused the S-shaped section of the cat-back to be planted firmly against a chunk of the frame, causing it to be quite loud as you'd imagine.
I need some advice
What are my options here?
is there a some kind of spacer avaliable for it?

I'm thinking taking it to a muffler shop and having them weld a piece into my midpipe to make it longer is going to be my best bet

Re: The ultimate DX/LX header/exhaust FAQ

Yeah that might be the best idea... Can you tell where the problem is? Look for if any of the exhaust hangers dont hang directly inline with those welded on your car, this will be pretty obvious and give you a good idea of where the problem starts. Also look to see if the bend over the control arm is a good bend and not making any contact

Re: The ultimate DX/LX header/exhaust FAQ

ok. I have an ex with megan headers, megan downpipe/test pipe. first I had an apexi n1 catback and it rattled when it was abour 3-4k rpm. I took off the whole cat-back and put my stock cat-back on and it still rattles at around that rpm. It seems the rattling is coming from the testpipe/down pipe. any ideas on why that is?

and if something is wrong, is there a point on running just the megan headers with stock downpipe and stock catback or even the megan headers with stock downpipe and apexi n1 catback? the rattling is kinda annoying...

Its lose. Are you using the stock spring loaded bolts?? Those things are crap and might have snapped. If your using the stock downpipe you need that donut gasket at the top of the downpipe that creates the seal at the header connection. Also use real hardware, not those stocker spring bolts.

If thats not the problem then check the connection between the downpipe and the cat back.

If thats not the problem... then check clearance issues. The exhaust flexes because the engine flexes. So it might be hitting your sway bar or something. If you have an lx/dx sway on your car the cat will be touching, there just isnt enough room and you'll need to lose the bar and pick up an EX or RSX front sway.

Report back.
