Re: LED Thread!
i know im the odd man out here having a 6th gen and all but it IS an LED thread to so what the hell. Not meaning to thread jack here either
My hatchback didnt come with a trunk light which, I don't have to tell yell is a royal pain in the *****. So I wanted to put one in and I have an infatuation with LEDs so why the hell not put one in?
I snagged a trunk light from an eg hatchback and I ordered a cool white SMD LED on eBay.
I wired the power to the positive terminal on my amplifier since its hot in.
I grounded the light to the trunk release indicator, its the blue with black wire on the passenger side of the car, underneath the rear speaker. In the sixth gen anyway...
popped it in place.
Voila, ill snag a pic tonight.
To civicchick: if you want to hook one up to turn on when you pop your glove box, you will need an interrupter switch, you can get it at RadioShack. It will close the circuit when the glove box is open and open the circuit when the glove box is closed. Youll have to drill a hole between the dash and the glove box lid so that it makes contact with you close it. Does that kind of point you in the right direction?

Re: LED Thread!
nice trunk light install. how did you have the right size hole already there? or was it just covered with a cap for your model.

Re: LED Thread!
^ im sure there was a cap there at one point but when i bought the car it was just a hole. I doubt honda would have left it like that brand new, i think it had popped out and the jack *** retard I bought the car from just left it like that. thankfully the eg hatch uses the same exact housing
Re: LED Thread!
Has any one had any problem with Brake Light LED's Melting ?
Putco has sent me 6 replacements already and they have all melted. I will never buy another Putco product again. Each time they said they upgraded me to a better more expensive brighter LED that had more LED's etc. all of them melted.

Re: LED Thread!
yeah with all the cheap junk out there its entirely possible (or expensive junk if they marked up the price for better profits). many of those bulbs use generic higher power leds that require large heatsinks to function properly. they draw too much power and melt themselves with no place to dissipate all the heat. an easy way to confirm is find a multimeter that can read current up to 10 amps and see what the led is drawing when hooked to 12v power supply. 350mA = 1w and i would not recommend using a bulb that draws more than around 100mA unless it has serious heat sinking or you are only using the led for short durations (20 secs or less). the luxer1 led bulbs i posted a while back here only draw 20mA and are super bright. that is only about 0.05w of power draw which is basically nothing. they are super bright because they use advanced nichia leds with a high lumen/watt ratio and are very efficient. they hardly even get warm with constant use. i have had very good luck with luxer1 white leds and also the jamstrait led bulbs they sell at autozone (usually the brighter hyper ones need to be found online). their hyper amber 194 led with four 5mm leds on it only draws 40mA and runs fairly cool yet bright.

Re: LED Thread!
^ur calculations are a lil off.
the equation is Watt = Volt x Amp
W = 12v x .350A
W = 4.2watts
1w = 12v x A
1w/12v = .083A
= 83mA (for 1w)
the equation is Watt = Volt x Amp
W = 12v x .350A
W = 4.2watts
1w = 12v x A
1w/12v = .083A
= 83mA (for 1w)

Re: LED Thread!
there is no calculation tho, these are actual measured standards when running hi power leds. 350mA=1w, 700mA=3w, 1000mA=5w etc. 70mA is what standard superflux leds run and they barely even get warm (no heatsinking required). this is nowhere near what 1w would dissipate. i have played with tons of leds and there is no way 83mA=1w. not even remotely close. most oem tails run their superflux leds at close to 80mA and if it were true that it was drawing 1w of power, those leds would burn out in a matter of hours from thermal failure. 1w produces a lot of heat. i think there is something both of us are missing and im gonna ask the led guys about it later. i dont know enough of the math details to say either way, im just going off of experience and measurements.

Re: LED Thread!
okay this is correct. seems we were thinking about two different things. i was talking about power consumed by the led die only, not the entire installed circuit (including resistors or drivers). the equation below is for everything together led and resistor. since the post above me was asking why his bulbs were melting, i assumed leds were running too hot and drawing more current than they should be. in most cases, the resistors should be dissipating most of the heat and making sure the leds only get what they need to run efficiently. sorry for the confusion. this equation is right when calculating TOTAL wattage draw with everything installed on the car.

Re: LED Thread!
OHHHHHH ok.
you were talking about the actual voltage of the LEDs.
most LEDs require 3v-4.2v to opperate. anything more will fry them. thats why we have drivers/resistors/PWMs to power the LEDS
so gearbox, you are correct...
if the LED requires 3v (and most do) 350mA*3v = 1A (about 1.05A)

Re: LED Thread!
Been a while since I've posted on here. Been kind of busy, but I finally found a few minutes to get some pics of all my LED's!!! Here we go..
License Plate Lights (Just a tad bit more dim in real life)

Plate Lights and Reverse Lights to show the differene

Just Reverse Lights

Reverse Lights at an angle

Plate Lights and 6000K HID's (Just thought the two always look nice together)

All interior lights

View from the side

Just the rear

Trunk Light (Got a better picture than the one a few pages back!!)

All under $10

Re: LED Thread!
Looks good ibanez. I have all the same lights, minus the HIDs. Do you have projectors?
Got my resistors today. My blue strip LEDs should be here tomorrow. So, I'll be installing my footwell lighting tomorrow night.

Re: LED Thread!
No they are not LED's. I am going to swap to the 04/05 tails soon. Debating whether or not I should buy the LED tails, or just buy normal tails and put LED bulbs into them. Or just get the tails and leave normal bulbs in them...

Re: LED Thread!
yeah definately go for the led tails. they look exactly like the 04-05 honda lights but have a led array for park/brake. way brighter and safer than putting led bulbs in.

Re: LED Thread!
well people should be watching and paying attention but usually they are busy doing other things and a brighter brake light can only help. ive seen some really dim lights before and could still see enough to know what hes doing, but not everyone pays attention to that stuff. brakes and rear signals are the two most important lights.
Re: LED Thread!
So if I do the 04/05 conversion will the LED tails be a straight plung and play. I'm just worried about getting those. IMO, one one LED in the array goes bad it just ruins the look. Here they are...

Re: LED Thread!
yeah those. the leds are not the greatest quality, but they are bright. so long as you dont sit on the brakes for minutes at a time, they will last forever. i always let off the brake after stopping so my rotors dont warp, and that saves the bulb life quite a bit too.
Re: LED Thread!
I'll probably just get the regular ones and maybe put LED's in them down the road. I'm not the only one that drives my car, just most of time. I don't think I will be able to teach the other people that drive it to go into neutral at red lights. What kind of LED bulbs would you suggest that would fit the 04/05 tails. I know most of the bulbs are the same for the 01-03's except for the brake lights.

Re: LED Thread!
i have jam strait bulbs and like em but they are not as bright as bulbs. i have those in my front park and turn signal, and sidemarkers where brightness isnt as important. but you have to find the hyper bright version which is the best one. ebay usually has em, and autozone has the 194 version. im not sure what size your bulb is in those tails, but im guessing 7440/7443 type. which you dont have many options for. led bulbs are pretty unreliable too and its likely you will burn those up if you use it often. vleds.com has some pretty bright hi power versions but they cost a bundle.
Re: LED Thread!
Went with the normal tails. Going to stick with the normal bulbs for now. I'll post a pic of the reverse bulbs when I put the new tails in. Should be a lot brighter with the clear lense!!

Re: LED Thread!
i have SMDs in my tails and turn signals and they are bright in the daylight. Very directional to the rear, not so much to the sides....but im more concerned with people rear ending me. Ill snap photos.

sry, i was in ghost mode again. ill try to keep up to date on here. lol
