CAI and hydrolock
CAI and hydrolock
Ok I know that this has been discussed a billion times, but everytime it seems to get way off topic. I have one simple question I am changing my SRI for a CAI. Do I need to be concerned hydrolock??? I know that if I drive through standing water and the filter is submerged then I do. However what about water that is from the road splashing up and hitting the filter my car sits very low. I also know that a bypass valve will not help in this situation that is why I am concered. Do I need to be???
Lets just keep this thread about this question only there are enough threads debaiting the two I have already made my decision I just need to know how careful I need to be.

No, you dont have to worry about it. We have sprayed water (at full blast) directly onto the filter element while the engine is running with no ill effect.
To hydrolock an engine, you need to ingest more than 10% water (by volume) into your engine. Think about how much water that is. It simply can't happen without submerging essentially all of the filter under water. It's like trying to suck the last bit of coke out of the bottom of a cup, once you get any air, you stop getting fluid.
Now, if you do submerge the filter 100% under water while the engine is running, you will hydrolock your motor almost instantly if you dont have a bypass valve installed.

i have a cold air and i have hydrolocked many times. i also cannot rev the engine in a mild rain without it stalling or sputtering. i wouldn't reccomend it unless your serious about the slight performance gain.

keep your sri. I never sucked water up in mine, but I live in az and we get like 360 days of sun a year. I dont have it anymore. I took it off for my stock airbox, noticed a nice gain in all rpms, than switched that out for a sri right before I turbod. Than I sold the SRI. I have a very nice gain with my new intake, probably like 1-120 hp at 10psi. haha.
