Radar Detectors!
Radar Detectors!
Does anyone here honestly agree with me that most radars don't work worth squat, I have owned a couple myself, and they were pretty much a joke, I mean ya they might go off near a cop or two, but then again when don't they go off? The cops are so many light years ahead of us when it comes to this!

good read ^
i have the passport x50 and it works, but im not always speeding. after various tickets/citations, i have changed my driving habits completely. i paid almost 3 bills for mine. i kinda regret it now that i have thought about the way i drive.
but in general, yes it is kinda of a watse. but to some ppl, it may mean a lot. i would love to have a police scanner or any device that can record where a cop unit is located heh

i know few folks who think a radar detector lets them become a rebel on the road. its ONLY meant to help prevent/avoid speeding tickets, nothing else.
i have one and i still get tickets, but not speeding related
I have a Cobra, It has saved my *** a couple times on the long boring trip accross the state. In town they go off so often I get to paranoid to speed. Since I have had one, it has made me change my driving habits. You may start to notice more cops around than you origionally thought.
Bottom line, its like a seat belt, wearing one doesnt always save your life, but your chances are better. But much more likely to get a ticket with one on your windshield.

I have an x50 and the only things that set it off are police radar, laser, and people driving around with illegal radar jammers. You must have been using cheap detectors.
I have the x50 and it goes off next to buildings and in the city also. Its not immune to it and neither is any other radar decector. Oh, wait a sec. I always have mine on highway mode and that's why it will go off in the city. I keep it that way incase it wouldnt pickup the cop(unlikely). Just to b safe
i wouldnt say radar detectors are useless. i think they would benefit drivers that go on long road trips or on the highway more often.
the passport x50 has a setting to change it to auto/highway/city. highway has a more sensitive band while city is reduced signal towards X/K/Ka/pop/etc. auto is more inbetween the sensitivity of City and highway. thats the way i see it. correct me if im wrong.

i have the x50 and its saved me at least 10 times since the day i've owned it (about a month) i leave mine on highway mode also so it will be more sensitive.. i think a good eye and good knowledge of your radar detector is unbeatable. although i think using radar detectors for the past couple years has made speeding an addiction for me :-/
I have a PNI Silver Bullet attached to my passenger visor. It has helped quite a few times! I ran the wire under the glove box and thru the trim of the pillar and around the visor. That way if/when I get pulled over I can pull the plug for the detector and it's not visible.
I got pulled over last week and it didn't even beep once. The cop showed me the gun at 60 in a 45 ($188 fine and 4 points). Nice guy, told him I just got back from vacation in TN and we talked for a couple minutes about the mountains. He wrote me up for an expired insurance card ($76 fine no points, $7.50 when I show proof of insurance). Radar detectors may not work but courtesy, a nice story, and a copy of an expired insurance card go a long way!

I have the bel pro rx65. Same as the passport x50 but with Ku band support and a voice that talks to you. First week I got it, saved me from a speeding ticket. I was doing 50 in a 40 with 2 cars in front of me. We had to go under and underpass and around a corner. Right when we hit just before the underpass it went of crazy and I debated wether to slow down or not, but I did just in case and the 2 cars it front of me got hit. He scanned the first car, then the 2nd, then me and I was already slowed down, so he took off after the 2nd car and she got a ticket.
High end radar detectors are really good. Theres a sit out there by radar roy do a serach. He has a lot of really good info...

I use the valentine one. Bar none, I think it's the best on the market. Car and Driver magazine has agreed for the past ten years.
First, you have to understand that the radar detector detects radio waves on different bands. Not all cops use the same bands. As well, some different buildings use different bands that a cop may use and hide behind.
That's the beauty of the valentine. It counts how many threats you have. So, say you drive by a building that typically gives off a k band signal. Well, what if a cop is sitting in the parking lot of the building where you can't see him until it's too late? Well, if you make that same drive and know that there is usually only one threat, you'll see two and know that you should slow down.
Not to mention, it is the ONLY radar detector that uses TWO antennas. This gives you true 360 degree protection around your car. One antenna faces forward, one to the rear. Other detectors only have one antenna aiming to the front. They claim to have a 360 degree coverage but that's only if the wave comes into the range of the antenna facing forward.
Anyways, it's superior for many reasons. Check out www.valentineone.com. There's a whole synopsis of why its so great (although kinda pricy.)
