srs light on all the time

People,

SR light has been on for a while. I tried to do the reset with the paper clip, but it did not work, meaning the light is still on. So I bought a module from ebay. Popped it in and same thimng- srs light is still on. Supplier said it didnt come from a crashed car. I am returning it.

So now, what would you do? Send my module to a place that specializes in resetting it? Anything else for me to look at? Retrieving codes? Could go to local jun yard and pull another one. Just some time.

Thanks.

Re: srs light on all the time

$20 says it's the driver's side seatbelt buckle.

Pull the code to be sure. Here's how to do it (source: DIY: SRS Codes and reading them. I consolidated all the steps from the CRSX link within and stuff here for ease of reading. All credit goes to user R3dline on ClubRSX)

How it do: (READ THE ENTIRE THING BEFORE PERFORMING. It'll help. I promise)
1) With the engine/car off and key out of ignition, jump pins 4 & 9 on the OBD connector with a paperclip, length of wire with the ends stripped, etc.

2) Turn your key to the "on" position. Don't start it, but just turn it on.

3) Your SRS light is gonna blink. Pay attention to the pattern! Luckily, the SRS light illuminates for 6s (bulb check), shuts off for 3s, then it starts the main code. After the main code, you get a 2s break to relax your eyes, then the sub-code. I'm not 100% sure on what happens after the 3s pause after the sub code, but it likely goes straight into the main code again.
  • The first set of blinks (after the bulb check) is gonna be the main code. Could either be slow blinks (1.2s between blinks) or super fast blinks (0.1s between blinks)
    • Count each slow blink as 1
    • Count each set of 4 super fast blinks as 10
    • Add them all together, and you get the main code
  • Second set of blinks is gonna be the main code. Remember, you get a 2s break to compose yourself. lol.
    • These are gonna be about 4x as fast as the slow blinks from the main code (0.3s between blinks)
    • Count each blink as 1
    • Add them together for the sub-code.
After you do all that, you should end up with a [main code]-[sub code] pairing. Match it to the list below, fix whatever issue instead of spray and pray with the parts cannon.

Hope this helps your troubleshooting

p.s. I deleted your other thread

Re: srs light on all the time

Rice, not sure if Im counting right, but first srs light comes on and stays on for say, 5-6 seconds. Then I get 4 super fast blinks(hard to even keep up/count correctly), then 5 slow blinks, then lastly, slightly faster, 3 blinks. Then srs light stays on permanently. I get 10+5-3 =15 -3. Can you confirm what code I have given this?

Thanks!

Re: srs light on all the time

Sounds like a 15-3 to me

6-second bulb check
Main Code
4 fast blinks = 10
5 slow blinks = 5
Sub code
3 blinks = 3

15-3 Faulty ODPS sensor

Wow- thanks, Rice for the confirmation! You are such a great member/resource here! To reply with advice so quick, and on a weekend!

Now to find out how to replace it- I understand I have to peel off the fabric in back of the pass seat, then pop it off, and pop new one in. Thing there is anything else to do? I hope one doesnt have to program a new one, meaning dealer.

lol I live on this site. I've been around since 2003 and stayed, so they slapped an Admin sticker on my ***. Downtimes at work, it's this and another forum I have open dicking around. I've legit made IRL friends on this site *cough @sdaidoji cough* even though they may live in other countries or across the country.

That is beyond the scope of what I know, bud. No lie, I didn't even know 7thgens had an ODPS sensor in the seats. I replaced my 2002's OEM seats (both driver and passenger seats) with Sparco racing seats and transferred over the seat belt buckles and popped zero codes. Even replaced them with OEM used black buckles to match my black seats.

Re: srs light on all the time

If you are certain it is 15-3 (dealer can confirm) then the OPDS unit may need to be initialized/callbrated again - unless it is faulty. Did you have a laptop near the passenger's seatback recently, as they can have an effect on the OPDS?

YIKES! I studied both those links, especially the 2nd one, and man, looks too complicated- to initialize. Only tech tool I have now is a paper clip. Maybe I should just abandon this. I thought of pulling a unit from an old civic in the local junk yard, only $15. But why bother, if I have to initialize it, whatever that means. Unless a "good used" unit from a junk yard car does not have to be initialized, well, then I will pull one and try it. Do ONLY new ones have to be initialized? Please advise.

Re: srs light on all the time

Sorry no personal experience with the OPDS repair/replacement - just what I have read.

If it were my vehicle, I would take it to a dealer as it is a safety component plus I have kids that sit in passenger's seat frequently.

Thanks, ND. No more kids here. Still, could be a concern. I take it with it "not functional" that means airbag would deploy with a child or an adult. Gonna take a chance on a junkyard part. Low risk. Can always return it. Easy to remove/install. Maybe even no need for programmimg.

If the SRS light is on the airbags will not deploy in a collision.

Does your car have side airbags? These are located on the sides of the front seats. I think you only have a OPDS unit with side airbags. Possibly your original replacement came from a car with side airbags and your car does not have them. That's why you got the failure for OPDS. If you don't have side airbags stick the original module in then pull faults from it.

Bro,

My car does have side air bags. Also, I am the original owner. No one has molested my car. Feedback appreciated.

Totally forgot that some 7thgens came with side airbags. lol

edit: I guess that explains why I never had SRS light issues after switching out to Sparcos

Right- Not sure if it means anything, but mine is an EX. Maybe all EX's have these side airbags(?). Anyway, people, tomorrow is the big day- going to the yard, hopefully find a sensor with my same part # on it. Pop it in and see. I will get back to you all!!

Re: srs light on all the time

Finally tried 2 sensors from the junk yard. Both failed. Sheesh. It was a small gamble. Oh well. Gonna patch up the seat cover with orig sensor. I guess my air bags wont work, but who cares. My daily driver doesnt have any.

Thanks to all who tried to help here.

Brotato, are you saying that with my srs light constantly on NO airbag will deploy, or just that the passenger airbag will not deploy? Also, reminder- I have side airbags. Im orig owner as well. Thanks.

Give this a try: dry the passenger seat back and reset the OPDS without HDS.

Safe one

Not so safe...
