D17a2 Cam Question
D17a2 Cam Question
Hey guys, I've been on this forum for a while, and have come across great info. I just recently swapped my 01 lx a1 head to a2 with the VAFC2. All is well and running smooth(knock on wood). Made 115 whp and 109 ftlbs tq with intake, stock lx cat and rsxs muffler, no res. Ill post up settings if anyone needs a reference. One question has come up that I cant quite find a true answer to. Doing some research showed me that our Vtec is simply opening up the other intake valve at a certain rpm, making it a 16 valve operation at high cam and 12 at low. The a1 head has all 16 opening all the time. My question is can the a2 cam be used on the a1 head? I've heard that it is hotter at high cam than the a1. I have a VAFC2 so I can add fuel if need be. Would it work? If I'm wrong about the operation of the engine, feel free to correct me. If anyone could shed some light on it that would be a good gain for the a1. I would think it would have the same top end power but much more low end due to the extra valve being open.
Re: D17a2 Cam Question
The VTEC on a D17 is not a "true" VTEC, I forget what it really is.
Since Crower only offers cams for the a2 head and not the a1 head I would say that they are not compatible. If they were I would think that they wouldn't advertise for just one head. Maybe they can tell you the difference.

Re: D17a2 Cam Question
the A1 simply does not have the internal rocker arms, etc required for the poor man SOHC VTEC to work. so no, the A2 cam will not work on the A1 head. anyways, the A1 cam is econo style. lob, angles, etc all geared for economy.

Re: D17a2 Cam Question
Thanks everyone. I was just wondering if it was possible. Would have been a great addition for the lx. I would have thought the a1 head would have a different cam available except for the gude cam.
Re: D17a2 Cam Question
If you have a a2 head, thats all you need to swap the cam in. The a1 and a2 motors are the same besides the head. Just drop in a crower a2 cam
