i got a question about vtec. Before it engages the car is less aggressive than when it engages right? So does a car with no vtec have a less aggressive setting all the time...or is the vtec setting the same as on a non-vtec car?? Kinda confusing but hopefully someone understands!
It's not less agressive all the time it basically pulls less since it doesnt have VTEC like the EX. For example, If stick LX races a stick EX, the EX will win do to the VTEC basically. The result is basically do to the same amount of skill of drivers and stock cars.

damn LX's....i should have just gotten the DX and saved el mucho denaro (i don't know spanish). i can roll the window down and other such things.....wait now that i think about it automatic/push button things are much easier. i'm lazy....
A v-tec engine will not always win over a non v-tec engine i have a dx and when i raced my friends ex we were dead even the entire way and his car had intake and exhasut and mine only intake. But i guess it all just depends on how good of a drive you are in that case.

Vtec is a little package box that honda likes to brag about that tries to explain or therefor make up for there torqless "wonders". Dont be upset about your non-vtec lower comp civic LX. Just think how happy you will be when you get that standford fabrications turbo and you can boost more than a vtec person can

Myth: VTEC kicks in at cartain RPMs
Fact: VTEC is always on
Myth: VTEC is used to make cars faster
Fact: VTEC is used to create a more efficient engine
Myth: VTEC rocks, and any cars with out it suck
Fact: VTEC is a gimmick (in the performance sense)

moreless hes perfectly right. I dont see Ferrari's or vettes with Vtec, why you might ask because its usless for racing but great for everyday streetracer wants good fuel economy and just to state a known fact the 3 series comes with vtec(there own version of it) but the M3 does not hmm makes you wonder?

I just love thier Padle shifters! I think you can only pop the clutch erm padle 10 times electronically though...correct me if Im wrong? So I have to go with a stick.
Any engine is designed with certain compromises. Less valve lift is better for low engine speed because it creates more turbulence and creates better burn. That enhances both efficiency and peformance. However as the engine RPM increases, the "bottleneck" becomes getting enough air into the cylinder. That is where a high lift cam becomes superior. Before VTEC, the engine designer chose the best compromise. That would be one cam profile that would do O.K. at either end of the RPM Range. VTEC sought to remove this compromise. It gives you the low lift and the high lift profile in the same engine.
Simply put, the VTEC allows the engine to be optimised for two different RPM ranges instead of one. That is, generaly speaking*, why the VTEC equiped engines ceate better high end power. At high RPMs they can breathe like they have a race cam and at low RPMs they can still idle smoothly.
*Some engines (like the one in the Civic HX) use VTEC to create a lean burn for increased fuel mileage and are not optimised for horsepower gains.
