re: FRSam's Project Cars

Okay - time for an update.

As I mentioned, the plan was to sell the TSX in the spring. Car sold May 1st. Fastforward to yesterday, May 6th, a new acquisition was made because my dad kept the S40. Can't afford an S2000 so this will have to do:
t a

Picked up a 2013 Scion FR-S with a 6-Speed manual. Was in the market for something a little more economical in the sub-$10,000 CAD range when this popped up for exactly $10k. Has 145,000km and drives amazingly. Not mint but it's very close. Very minor spots appearing on random spots of the car. As you can see, it has an FA20 (or 4U-GSE depending on whose engine code you reference) under the hood and it's a fun engine but has an awful dead spot between 3.5 and 5.5 rpm. Luckily, it came with an OFT V2 (basically Subaru's Flashpro) which I can use to upload basemap or custom tunes. Will more than likely keep stock until other modification happens - probably won't be for a while because I need to recuperate my savings lol. For now, I'll relax with the 35+ mpg this thing gets on the highway.

re: FRSam's Project Cars

let's see, if i remember correctly, FRS is more tail happy, so transplanting some BRZ parts is an option?
hey, your cylinders are laying down... (flat four )
don't forget that driving styles are different from FWD.
FWD, if your tail comes around, you keep steering, punch throttle, RWD, when the tail comes around, point wheels where the car is heading to until you get the rear traction back, keep throttle kind of steady - punching will make it finish the spin.

re: FRSam's Project Cars

It’s been a weird transition, for sure. Prior to this, I’ve maybe driven 100 miles total in RWD, and never in any real aggressive manner. It’s completely different to anything I’ve ever driven. Not sure if it’s more tail happy or not - cornering is awesome and it sticks well but I need to remember I’m in a RWD now lol. I keep treating it like a FWD

re: FRSam's Project Cars

when i change from the civic to the miata, I completely reset my mind concerning driving styles.
also, the sub/toy twins are a momentum car too, not much of a power drift, rather momentum oversteer car, so read some about controlling it.
same as a FWD, if you lift the throttle mid-corner, the rear will step away. On the other hand, it will understeer even harder than a FWD if you punch throttle. Have seen some guys in an amateur drifting run that were in terminal understeer punching the throttle and going into further terminal understeer... you need to lift throttle, move load to the front tires to recover front traction....

re: FRSam's Project Cars

Installed (uploaded?) an off-the-shelf stage 1 tune from OFT. Meant for stock cars and simply tunes out the flat midrange and adds a little up top. Haven't done any official 0-60 comparisons but it feels like I lost probably 0.2 seconds. That part isn't so important - I just don't have to flog the damn thing in order to get up to speed now. It's a much more usable power band

re: FRSam's Project Cars

Okay, update.

My PLM unequal length header arrived this morning so I got to installing that rather quickly. Didn't take any photos because I was in a bit of a time crunch but did make a recording shortly after. It's this guy, though:

Just the catless header; completely stock otherwise. Updated to stage 2 on the OFT so it doesn't read the O2 sensor data and there is subsequently no CEL. Although it does sound decent, I can't honestly recommend PLM (at least this header) because the fitment is absolutely atrocious. I had to bore out the holes and use some brute force to align the flanges because it was off about half an inch. The welds and the material look to be decent, but it was an absolute nightmare to install. Once it's on, though? Looks and sounds decent.

Definitely. People have reported gains in the range of 30hp/30tq on a dyno, but since I'm at roughly 4300ft elevation, I'll be happy with 15 each. The main difference is the power band. With the stock header, the car had an awful torque dip, usually in the range of losing 20 ft-lbs between 2.5 and 5k rpm. The initial tune I put on it helped a bit, but the new header completely transforms the car. There's no dip now and it'll chirp from 2nd to 3rd now lol. My bluetooth OBD reader measures 0-60 so I'll have to take it out to see how it compares to stock. The manuals are supposed to do in the 6.2 range so I wouldn't be surprised if it's high 5's now

Re: FRSam's Project Cars

I'm getting it down in the 6-ish range. Fastest was 5.98 to this point. Given it's supposed to be a slow car and it doesn't even have bolt-ons yet, I'll take it. Highway fuel economy is still in the 35mpg range, but WOT is abysmal now lol

Launching is hard to do well so that’s pretty good. Are you able to time like a 30-80 roll?

I don't think so. I haven't really played around with it much so I'm sure I can find some alternative.

Re: FRSam's Project Cars

I never heard about the torque dip issue on these until you mentioned it back when you first bought the FRS. Sounds terribly annoying.

It was pretty frustrating. In order for it to go anywhere, I had to downshift one or two gears on the highway to get it to do literally anything because it wouldn’t react to throttle between 3 and 5k. Not really sure why Toyota/Subaru would allow it to leave like that.
