they are more expensive :P
not needed if you do not do autoX or similar competition.
better looks, though

I plan on running 235's on 16x8's but they'll be for competition only. If you're running any kind of performance tire (RE01's, Azenis) then the extra width makes driving a lot of fun especially on aftermarket suspension. But yes, it is more expensive.

A wider footprint also makes it more difficult to cut through snow (if it affects you) and can sometimes make it harder to evacuate water as a wider tire increases the surface area that has to move through the standing water. Wider tires also increase friction that, while increasing cornering grip slow you down in a straight line and increase rolling resistence. Everyone is on point, if it's grip and looks that you want, then damn the torpedoes and do as the hookers here on OBT do and stuff the widest rubber in there you can.

Yeah increased rolling resistance is a good point. It can actually be quite a positive, particularly if you're putting down some decent power figures. Spinning tires through 3rd gear is no fun

lol your absolutely right it isn't much fun at all. Like you guys eloquently stated in yalls previous posts you have to weigh performance and practicality.

i run a 215/40/17 on falken azenis and love them. much more traction when i feel like hooning around the corners and on ramps...much improvement when running in the canyons.
i did do a trip to sema this past week and i only avg 33mpg...when i ran my stock steelies (195/60/15) i avg 37mpg
so yes, it does affect ur mpg quite a bit.

^im bring this thread back after am onth because, ironically enough, it popped up in google when I had a question and it actually helped me. But I wanted to add something to your post that many people over look when they upgrade tires. Your speedo goes off when you upgrade tires, but keep in mind your odometer does too. So if you go to miata.net and use their tire calc, find out what % your tires are off by and add that to your mileage, I bet that is where most of your MPG went

for example, if u put a 205width tire on a 7" rim, ur tires will be stretched a little resulting in an even smaller tire diameter (which the miata tire cal does not take into consideration)
it'll look like this: \_______/
where as if u get a 205width on a 6.5" rim, it'll look closer to this: |________|
\_______/
|______|

i use to get 37-39 with 195/60/15
but my car is pretty orientated around handling. warped with falken azenis 615. sticky as hell, but the tire life is like 13k miles. not bad for a 200tredwear

never really understood why people spend a **** ton of money on their suspension and then get some shitty tires...or anything that has higher than a 250 tredwear
