2001 civic EX, blows ice cold air, but the compressor cycles on/off about every 3 seconds, but mostly this happens when car is started up, for about 5 minutes. PSI low side goes from 30-55 or so. Then down again, of course, all over again. Sometimes the comp cycles for longer period, which I believe is normal, say, every 15 seconds. But during a drive, it has been know to completely stop blowing cold.

Any idea why this happens? Pressure switch starting to go?

Check the compressor clutch gap clearance. If it's too wide the clutch can slip, causing heat, eventually tripping the thermal protection.
