Driver side rust under carpet
Driver side rust under carpet
On the driver side it was quite wet for a period of time. You can see surface rust, there are no holes everything is solid. I believe it is only on the driver side. When I was checking underneath the carpet, there was a red covering or material, not sure what it is? Originally i thought it was part of the metal bottom. It broke away and exposed the rust. The vehicle is still in great shape, no rust on the panels or wheel wells. What would be the best thing to do to prevent any further rust ? Should I just remove (scrape off) that red covering and paint it with some kind of rust paint ? If so what would be the best paint to use ?
Thanks, Julian

Why was it getting wet and did you fix the issue causing the wetness? Please attach some (less zoomed-in) images that include the entire floorboard area. The issue may require welding and/or bondo or fiberglass.

Figure out where the water is coming from, might have a leaky windshield.
that stuff that popped off is sound deadening, from what i can tell from your photos it just looks like minor surface rust. Just wire wheel the rust, apply some rust converter, and then hit it with some rust paint for good measure

Re: Driver side rust under carpet
Thanks for the reply, I added some more pics for a better shot. The water issue on the driver was fixed quite some time ago. Just recently I was on a trip and I was parked in a low spot in a hotel parking lot. Drainage was poor and heavy rains overnight allowed some water to come into the carpet area. No higher than that. So I am drying things out and noticed that rust area. There are no holes, and mostly surface rust. That red cover I cant take it out without ripping it, it must be clued or attached where those round circles are (see pics). I am just wondering how I should best deal with the issue, to prevent future issues ?

The sound deadening is bonded to the floor. Just pull up all the loose bits so you can treat all the rust. So the water came through the bottom of the door?
Re: Driver side rust under carpet
Recently in the parking I assume it came through the door, several cars in the lot parked in the low lying area were flooded. The original water issue on the driver side was many winters of wetness on that driver side, and neglect on my part. I am on the east coast of Canada, Rust is a major issue, I get it undercoated every year, underneath is very solid, no rust. . I did notice on the passenger side that the rubber piece on the door needs to be glued, it is hanging in one part.

Re: Driver side rust under carpet
It's steel, wire wheel, rust converter spray (available at crappy tire), and like tremclad for the paint
