Best primer for quarter panels?

Did a rust repair where I put fiberglass filler over the quarter panels. Should I use an epoxy primer or a 2K high build primer?

Anyone have any experience here?

Re: Best primer for quarter panels?

I did some pretty extensive rust repair on a car I had last year. I used rust converter before applying fiberglass (this is a critical step), then sanded it smooth before applying self-etching primer, paint, then clear coat.

I did the same. Cut out the rust, applied POR15, fibreglass filler. Now just wondering what primer to use. High build is good for filling scratches, right?

Epoxy is supposed to be waterproof and allows for some flexing, right? Or is high build good enough?

Re: Best primer for quarter panels?

High build should be fine. It ultimately depends on how deep the scratches are. Anything deep will require proper filling.

Re: Best primer for quarter panels?

I am using a glazing putty which will fill most pinholes/scratches. Then the high build x 2 coats. high build can shrink so IDK if 3 is better. More is apparently not better.

Start with one coat and go from there. I've never used high build primer so I'm not sure how it acts.

Re: Best primer for quarter panels?

How long after priming with 1K high build should I sand & add the base coat? 24 hours? 72 hrs?

The primer is likely to shrink a little, no idea tho what is optimum.

I do it while it's still tacky. Usually no more than an hour if I can avoid it.

Re: Best primer for quarter panels?

OK well I left it for over a day. Also, I used a 1K high build primer. Looking forward to the finished job so I can put the car on the road again!

Re: Best primer for quarter panels?

One more question: Can I sand/polish the clear coat anytime or does it have to be done within a set time frame?

What if I didn't sand the clear coat? Would that affect the car in any way?

Re: Best primer for quarter panels?

If there are no runs, there’s no need to sand. Wait for it to dry completely before polishing.

Re: Best primer for quarter panels?

Should I clay bar the fresh clear coat or surrounding areas?

All I need is Meguire's polish, right? I don't need Meguires compound or anything else?

Re: Best primer for quarter panels?

I never used a clay bar. I used buffing compound to help blend the colour difference (there inevitably will be) and then polishing compound to make it shine.

So buff the color differences with Meguires ultimate compound:

Then ultimate polish to make it shine?
