Timing belt tensioner

This tension doesn’t seem right. I replaced belt, tensioner, and spring. Followed installation instructions. Set TDC. Loosen tensioner 180*. Rotate crank CCW 3 teeth. Tighten tensioner to 33 ft lb. Once I do that I get
good tension on the front side and a little slack on back side which should be good. Once I rotate CCW I get slack on the front side “cam to crank” and then it tightens up again.

here’s a video of how it runs. Just doesn’t look right to me.

so I got everything on and it tightens up but then it gets loose again. I’m working on taking lower timing cover off again right now. Might take like 20-30 minutes.

Re: Timing belt tensioner

Is there a such thing as “too tight” I threaded a 14AWG wire through the hole of the tensioner and pulled it tight while rotating engine CCW. Now it’s tight tight. Should there be a little slack on the water pump side or it will be ok? I’ve rotated engine multiple times and it no longer gets loose.

taking a break for now. It’s hot outside.

Re: Timing belt tensioner

Should be a little bit of slack on the one side

ok I’ll loosen slightly and see if I can’t get some slack on the water pump side.

Re: Timing belt tensioner

I was able to loosen and get some slack but it was making some noise like it seemed too tight. Loosened again and now it looks and sounds much better. Gonna work on putting it all back together tomorrow morning and also do another valve adjustment while I have the valve cover off to put back the upper timing cover.

Here’s another video. I think this looks correct now.

awesome. Not sure why the tensioner wouldn’t rotate when i turned the crank and get tight but I was able to manually tension it? Tensioner and spring are new from dealer. Belt is gates.
