I've got a 2002 hatchback. There are two metal rods that go from side to side that kind of hang under the rear deck speakers. These two rods meet in the middle and squeak like crazy. I don't know what their function is, and don't want to do something stupid to something that's important. Any help or advice would be deeply appreciated.

Hatchback, but rear deck speakers? Doesn't make sense, there is not rear deck. If it's not actually a hatchback it sounds like the truck open assist springs.

I'm such an idiot. It's not a hatchback. I always have the back seats folded down, and it I treat it like a hatchback. Sorry guys!!!

Ok so most likely it's the rods for the trunk, maybe a clip broke or something.
Or maybe something in the spare tire area.
Unless it's only noticable because you have the rear seats down and the sound is getting amplified

The two rods for the trunk cross in the middle where there is a small sheet metal bracket. On my '02 the spot welds on this bracket broke off and began rattling like crazy. I just used some small self-tap screws to mount it back in place.
