Speaker Mounting Depth?
Speaker Mounting Depth?
Hi everyone.
I have a 2002 Honda Civic EX Sedan. My question is what is the real mounting depth? What speakers have you guys been successfull putting in and how much modification, if any, was neccessary. I really want to put a pair of mb quart 5.25 or 6.5's in but you know that more high end speakers have a longer driver depth. I look at crutchfield but they don't even have a recommended speaker for the front-if Honda knew how much people like to hook up civic's why wouldn't they make everything bigger like accomadation, without threat to the ride, for 18's and maybe 3 inch mounting depth for speakers. Any advice/tips would be greatly appreciated, Thank You. BenjaminBartoli

Well, the definite size of the stock speakers are 6 1/2", but yes the true problem is the depth. Like you said, 6" or even 5 1/2" might be better. You can check out the DIY for front speaker removal here:

Then some charts are here for the depths, scroll to the bottom for the chart:

Now, if you are going to replace the front ones, you probably want to replace the rear ones as well. I have a story about that.. I got JL audio 6" x 9"s, I removed the rear deck myself with the help from Ghosty's DIY, which was very helpful. (Thanks!) Then again, his is for a coupe and you have a sedan. Well, underneath the rear deck are raised up portions about the size of the speakers. I put in my JLs they fit perfectly, except that the magnet was too big. I called up the audio shop in town that deals JL, and they gave me the run-around like they didn't even want to help me. They guy said they would have to build a custom plate and all this. (But also let me mention that these people are known for being snooty and stuck-up.) I went to Circuit City knowing that they had some slim-fitting Alpine 6" x 9"s. After speaking with the audio guy there, he told me about the time he installed speakers into the rear of a Prelude--he just cut off the raised up plastic portion (underneath the rear deck), slid a mouting plate underneath the speaker, and it was a-okay. I did the same thing to my rear deck. Yes, I cut it up, but it's all underneath and no one can see it. So, no biggie. Also, if you do this, keep that original foam that was attached to the bottom of the deck, or get some other thin foam. (I wish I had pictures, darn.) But the really hard part was getting the rear deck back on--Very frustrating! (And the main reason why I'm not getting my tinting anytime soon.) Also I bought a can of Tuff Stuf, which is expandable foam in a can. I put some of that underneath the deck up from the trunk to stop any rattling coming from the speakers/deck. Pretty simple fix.
Hm, I think that's it for that. I have hopes of going all out with JLs. What about replacing those tweeters? That is possible right? Have you decided what deck to go with yet? I got my mind set on an Alpine deck. My friend said I should get some big fitting desk that'll take up the place of the original stock deck and that little compartment underneath it.
Woo, I think I've typed enough. I could have started my own thread with all that. But I bet somebody has already mention that somewhere on the board.
