Drivers Side Seat Replacement - airbag sensors

I have a 2006 coup. My seat rail is broken so the seat is stuck in place - fortunately in the proper location for me. But the side of the seat is now worn through from getting in and out. I need to replace the drivers side seat only.

I have sourced a couple of seats in really good shape from a wrecking yard, but as I understand it, if any airbags have been deployed - not the drivers seat airbag - in the donor car, even the drivers seats are garbage as it costs a thousand dollars to reset the sensors. Is this the case, or can they be replaced or reset? Are the sensors actually in the seats?

Is the drivers side as complicated as the passengers side? I only need to replace the drivers side.

One car I am looking at for a seat had the airbag on the passenger side deployed not the drivers side - but as I understand it this doesn't matter, comments?

And finally - don't flame me or lecture me, but I still have not taken my car to the dealer for the well over due airbag recall. If I replace the seat even with a car that has had the bags deployed, is this resetting the sensors something that the dealer would do while doing the recall work anyway?

Re: Drivers Side Seat Replacement - airbag sensors

I would find a car that hasn't had any airbags deployed.

air bag replacement for recall does not need reset, since they have not been deployed, you can ask them directly
I would not think the seat weight sensors stores deployment data, they are sensors... They would be on the SRS controller

Hi Colin, could you (or someone) elaborate? I understand a seat from a vehicle that hasn't been deployed is optimal. Problem is most examples at a junk yard would be totally worn out. The one I am looking at is in nice shape.

So as I understand it, there are four bolts for the seat, a four connections - for airbag system etc, one airbag for the drivers side (other airbags are side curtain and steering wheel) and three sensors.

Two of those sensors are external to the seat (one for side impact, and one in the seat belt - female side latch). The third sensor is a sensor for the seat position (and deployment) that monitors if the seat is too far forward upon impact, the airbag deploys with less pressure. THe car appears to have been t-boned from the passenger side and the the side curtain airbag on the passenger side seat was deployed.

If I were to take the drivers seat from the wreck, there would only be one sensor physically in it. And if I swapped that sensor with the sensor from my broken seat, in my opinion the SRS system would not know any different. The position sensor under the drivers seat is held in place by two torx head screws.

comments?

You can try your suggestion but I'm not going to promise it will work.
