These aluminum LIM Gaskets? The 3.1 also had plastic coolant elbows that failed (just like the 3.8) did u replace those with the Dorman aluminum ones? If not the will fail much quicker

i agree compression test, then leakdown(probably more expensive than the gasket lol)but the block test would be inconclusive since the egr uses exhaust fumes :/
but if the compression was good i would try the water passage gasket. $8 http://www.autozone.com/cooling-heat...&checkfit=true

Re: 2001 Head gasket Again?????
Link was to a head set, I only did the intakes. I did not know a set exists with anything other than nylon sandwich gaskets, and I still would want to open the box to see what I get before I buy it LOL.....The parts store I got them from did not mention this option when I called for them.
I do remember some confusion as to whether each engine had an old style rocker pivot or new, and having to take what was available at the time after receiving an incorrect set.
(GFs family had a pair of 96 Cieras with 3.1 one was old style and the other was new style, I did intake gasket jobs on both.)
These 3.1s did not use plastic elbows.
3.8 Series II used them and they suck donkey *****.

Oh that's right. The 3.1 leaked coolant from the timing cover
Fel-Pro Intake Gsk Set 3.1L V6 Gm: Fel-Pro MS98004T
This is the part number for the LIM gasket set, the other link showed the same gaskets it was just easier to find with the head gasket set

hahahaha
the felpro gaskets are MLS too, check this link out it shows how the UPDATED FELPRO 2.5l suburu gasket was designed...it was a really common for these things to blow head gaskets using OEM gaskets. kinda like a 1.7l honda

p.s. kungfu alone is for children and steven seagal... MMA is where its at

Re: 2001 Head gasket Again?????
and i also like how u say "leakless" nippon mls head gaskets... seeing as how people are constantly blowing their head gaskets lol
i think u meant honda OEM "LEAKY" nippon mls gaskets

Re: 2001 Head gasket Again?????
i am trying to help scout1, im trying to point out that using a gasket design that is KNOWN to fail isnt the way to fix a reoccurring problem, and that felpro(a gasket company) makes better gaskets then hondas OEM manufacturer(honda doesnt make their own parts they subcontract out the manufacturing, just like most other car manufacturers) . But yes sdaidoji, a headgasket failure thread would be a better place to discuss this

"NIPPON LEAKLESS" is the brand name, not an optimistic description.
If GM called their intake gaskets 'leakless', that would be an optimistic description.

Re: 2001 Head gasket Again?????
American brands don't seem to get it.
PINE would probably be an improvement over original.
Outsourced to China?

It's easy to improve on a crap design (GM).
It's hard to improve a design that's already decent.
Re: 2001 Head gasket Again?????
i under stand thats the name of the brand im saying its funny because its a misnomer.
of course gm didnt call anything leakless. the hardest part of owning a gm car is keeping oil and coolant in it lol
but GM did create weatherpack connectors and everyones adopting that
thats why i would like for scout1 to try to change the water passage gasket, im thinking it may blow from increased exhaust manifold pressure. ive seen this issue on another car ive fixed, i just cant for the life of me remember what kind of car it was. but i remember the egr was mounted to a cooling block just like hondas configuration...kind of like the ford trucks that use to use EGR coolers they had the same symptoms... no loss in compression, leakdown test is good, possible white smoke(but not generally) and coolant bubbling from radiator(mostly under load)

Some do, some don't. It's only become a huge deal because very few people can figure out the early symptoms.
Re: 2001 Head gasket Again?????
ezone im not trying to say gm is better than honda they both have bad designs...ive taken my car to the dealer to get my airbag infiltrators changed...TWICE! because honda used a bad manufacturer for those parts, that could have killed me and not just my car

Re: 2001 Head gasket Again?????
Or a tire brand called "Goodride" is anything but. (Yes it's a real tire name.)
"Triangle" is a tire brand too, and it's probably a step above "Goodride" IMO.
Triangle is round in this case, rounder than the Goodride.
Ever hear of a tire brand called Unicorn?
but GM did create weatherpack connectors and everyones adopting that

Test, don't guess.
Re: 2001 Head gasket Again?????
all the test to determine egr gasket failure in this configuration would be inconclusive...u kinda just have to change it ($8)
it wouldn’t leak compression, so a compression test would read within spec, and so would a leakdown test. if u did a block test it would read that there ARE gasses in the coolant but i believe thats from the EGR(like on a ford) this wouldnt effect the drivability at all, except coolant loss and overheating

Re: 2001 Head gasket Again?????
When was your most recent replacement?
Stay tuned, you may get another notice soon

Even the cars that used Autoliv brand (which are not affected by the recall) still have to be removed to be inspected to verify the brand, and it sure seems like they all get this done more than once.
We are returning the old ones by the pallet load.

The results of that test would dictate the next step.
Re: 2001 Head gasket Again?????
if its bad enough to recall 34 million cars.. something was seriously wrong
first notice was like 6-7 months ago and i asked while i was there "do you have to change out the passenger side?" he said "no the dirver side is the only one thats defective"...2 months ago i got the recall notice for the passenger side, theve reassured me this would be the last time
i hope your not right
and the reason im so worried about the infiltrators is that i was in an accident in a 2015 dodge ram 2500 5.7 hemi earlier this year. A lady pulled out in front of me while i was doing 60, i was wearing a seatbelt that didnt lock up and NON of my airbags were deployed, so i ended up down in the floor board. she had to be cut from her Montero sport and carefighted to the hospital... dodge sent out a private investigator and then their lawyers sent me a letter saying it wasnt their fault. My truck had less than 2,000 miles and i bent the frame an 1.5 in. on one side and the motor and front end was destroyed....

Pressurizing each cylinder to 150-175 PSI should prove or disprove a combustion chamber breach (head gasket).

We have ordered parts for one recall only to find out the next day a car now has the recall on the other side to be done.
We are already several years into various versions of these recalls.
We started off checking serial numbers on the suspect units....then as they learned more about the problems they started changing what they wanted us to do in the field. Eventually we seemed to replace most of them.
Your car must be one of the more recent additions, as the coverage and scope of the recall has increased several times as they investigated and learned more about the nature of the failures.
It may include more cars as they learn more, IDK.
There have been so many revisions it's not even funny.
Recalls this big....owners are notified in batches, not all at once. There can't be 34 million people showing up at their dealers on Thursday, it does not work that way. The suppliers have to have time to produce the replacement products too, they would be overwhelmed as well. I have now seen something like 4 different suppliers for the airbag recall parts I've been installing.
Can't comment on your Mopar product.
Re: 2001 Head gasket Again?????
Didn't have much time but went out and played with the car for a little bit. Did a leak down test and all cylinders were 15% or less, that's the good news. Did a pressure test an all cylinders and they seemed ok. Did it again and let each cylinder sit for about 15 minutes. All were good except cylinder #4 had a slow leak into the radiator. So it pretty much confirms head gasket is going to be changed again. I appreciate everybody's comments and advice. Car will have to last until Christmas when I am off for 10 days. I will make sure I get the OEM HG this time and I will changed out the water passage while I am at it. It is running ok and it is a slow leak so I will just top it off in the morning and try to use it just for my son to go to work.
