head gasket, valves replaced...
My car is currently in the shop to have the head gasket replaced, timing belt, and water pump done. They sent my head off to the machine shop and just got back to me. Said it needed planed because it was severely warped. Also said some of the exhaust valves were bad and would need replaced too for $300 extra. Any idea if this is something that commonly happens? I know the head can warp, but the valves??? I guess I dont have much of a choice though, so i'm going to have to have it done?
Thanks!
Thanks!
Re: head gasket, valves replaced...
did the engine overheat at any point in time? that really is the only reason for the head to warp....if it did not, the head should be fine.....
valves do not generally need replacing unless your timing belt snapped and the pistons hit the valves, did this happen?
what was the purpose of all this work? who told you that you needed the work done and why?

"Tight valves burn." They get replaced.
Just sayin....

I don't know I adjusted my valves when I replaced my head gasket. The hadn't been touched in ten years and all of them were looser than the maximum spec. I adjust them in the middle of the spec, but later found this interesting read. Honda's Tech Line Summary article ATS050805.

Re: head gasket, valves replaced...
Problem is, seems like most of Hondas products tend to TIGHTEN the valves as they age. (Due to stem stretch, "tuliping" and maybe seat recession on some (early CRV for one).
Experience tells this, not the maintenance guides and books.
EDIT: After seeing enough problems caused by valves that tighten up over time, we don't judge by only by listening for noise because that's not the only possible way they can have a problem.
Tight valves don't make noise. Tight valves can cause low manifold vacuum, P0172/rich codes, misfire codes, low compression, and burn.
Loose valves make noise, but don't burn.

I used to go a wee bit tight on Mazdas with rocker arms, they tended to loosen.
Old water cooled VWs with buckets and shims had a pretty wide range to shoot for, a whole 0.10mm range.
Old air cooled VW engines we set loose so they didn't burn or snap off....

I haven't done an adjustment in 130k miles. I'm SURE they are out of spec but they aren't loud. I'm not going to do one either lol. Ride it out see what happens
