Odd Shifting Problems
Odd Shifting Problems
I don't understand it but for some reason my car becomes more difficult to shift in warmer weather. It has been a common problem with the stock shifter and still with the new Revo SS with aluminum shift bushings. Oddly enough, the engine's operating temp doesn't have anything to do with this issue, it basically acts the same if I baby or beat on the car if the outside temperature is right.
For example, I will be able to shift smoothly into all gears if the temperature is cool or below 60 F. I can run the car hard (3000rpm+ shifts) and not have a problem shifting quickly or slowly into any gear. If its sunny and warm, it will be incredibly difficult to shift into 1st and 3rd gear. Generally, shifting into first is a common issue with this model but pushing the clutch in again or shifting to second sometimes doesn't solve the issue. Trying to shift into first either feels like I'm pulling on an rubberband or I'm hitting a "wall". Third sometimes feel the same way, often it just will not move into third resulting in missed shifts. Generally, all the gear seem more difficult to shift into and I've been having a hard time getting into 5th gear as well. The shifter feels poor and not precise when its warm. However, if the temperature is cool, there are no issues and it shifts great?
The only shift bushings I haven't replaced are the two on the top of the transmission case itself under the hood (visible once airbox is removed). I have the bushings but I'm not sure how to install them. When I took the cotter pins out to remove the stock bushings, they looked like they are pressed into the shift rods on the transmission and are not serviceable? I just replaced the cotter pins and left it alone as I didn't want to risk damaging anything attempting to install them. I'm also not sure this is the problem? This is a 2001 Honda Civic EX 5 speed with a revo ss short shifter, aluminum shifter bushings, and the grey's kit upgrades.

Re: Odd Shifting Problems
Heh. Usually it's the other way around. Have you tried changing your transmission fluid at all? I've heard that short shifter kits make shifting a little bit notchy, but I think that tends to be throughout all temperatures.
Re: Odd Shifting Problems
Changing the shift cable bushings on the transmission with a corksport set has seemed to make a huge difference since there was a lot of play in the shifter cable. It was a night/day difference in the shifter feel and I haven't had an issue so far. The original bushings had 166,000 miles on them and I think were toast at this point. I might change the transmission fluid in the future since it was last done with synthetic fluid at 148,786 miles but I'm going to see how it goes so far.
