Trunk lid/latch issue?

My wife has an '02 EX and a while back I took the oem wing off. After a couple of months with no wing the trunk stopped latching and would pop up while driving. The only way to latch it is to push down and listen for the click. It seems like without the weight of the wing it pops up and slowly bent either the hinges which I doubt or the sheet metal on the lid. I checked the springs for the hinges and tried them in the other slot but that made the lid pop up even faster. I can't believe that there are different springs/hinges for wing and non wing deck lids. Is this a common problem and if so what's the resolution. I think I read somewhere the cable or latch was the issue?

I searched around for a while on this and can't find any answers.

Re: Trunk lid/latch issue?

There would have to be "heavier" trunk springs for a trunk with the OEM wing. The weight of the wing adds a little more weight to almost the outermost point of the trunk's rotation, adding that much rotational torque @ the trunk's pivot point. The heavier spring with the lighter weight probably stressed the latch so it doesn't latch so securely anymore.

I wonder if you installed the trunk springs for a trunk without a wing, if it would alleviate your problem.

I can't find the part numbers for the coupe, but on this drawing, it's number 21 & 22

For the sedan, however, they're # 23 & 24, and they run ~$10 plus shipping, each

So you think it's as easy as a spring swap?

Re: Trunk lid/latch issue?

The hoop bolted to the car that the trunk latch mates to is adjustable by loosening the mounting screws. (name = striker plate?)

I would look to see if it has gotten pushed to the max lower limit over the years. Mark it's current position loosen and move it up a bit and see if it latches better.
