Hey,

I've been having problems with not being able to turn my lock on the driver's side with the key. I popped the side of the door last night and found that the problem is with the tumbler system itself, which is too expensive for me to fix. Right now I'm just leaving the car unlocked all the time T.T

I'm thinking instead to just buy a keyless entry system (there's already power locks installed on the car).

1. Can I install an aftermarket keyless entry system? (I have an aftermarket radio, does that make a difference?)
2. How much should I be looking to pay if I install it myself (Canada, specifically)? Any recommendations?
3. Are there any good guides for a DIY noob to install said system?
4. Can the system open my trunk as well if included in the kit? The lever from the inside cannot open trunk because the wire corroded off.
5. Any other problems I should consider/look out for?

Yes you can. No it does not make a difference.

Canada, I don't know. In the US I got mine with remote start for under $100. I like DEI brands like Viper, Clifford and Python. I have a Python system. Check out DEI's website. They probably ship to Canada.

They are "universal". The Instal sheet tells you what the wires do and it's your job to know what wires go where in the car. I used this site www.the12volt.com to help me locate wires. I still verified their operation with a multimeter though.

You need a solenoid to undo the latch so you need to send power back to the trunk. It's not as easy as in other cars because our latch is mechanically activated.

Have you ever wired anything before?

Hi,
I had the same problem with my drivers door. I just removed the tumbler by myself and fixed it. You only have to open it and see if every pin is good. I ended removing one pin that was worn off and was the reason the key wasn't turning. Maybe you should give it a try before buying a keyless entry system

Does this look like a decent cheap option?


Do I just wire it up and throw the unit in the door gap behind the panel?


As for wiring...it's just cutting and stripping wire and connecting them right? Can just buy a connector from the Source or something?

Is there a simple way to open up the lock cylinder, or is there a guide somewhere? (Doesn't look like the service manual is of help?)

I don't have any experience with that kit, couldn't tell you if its good or not. I wouldn't buy it but that's me.

It's cutting stripping and soldering the wire. I don't know what Source you are referring too?

The unit is usually put under the steering column. All the wires for the doors can be found under the driver kick panel and dash.

"The Source" = Canadian Radio Shack

Just go out to Home Depot, Lowes, heck, Wal Mart and buy a kit of wire connectors. You can crimp them together, but soldering would be much better.

Wow...took me 4 hours to finish up the project (3 hours to take out/put back the cotter pin that keeps the unit together). I ended up just not putting the metal bracket back because it was a waste of time and it was fine. Had to use to dental pick and instead of pulling it out like the service manual says, I pushed it out from the top instead.

Now I have a functioning lock, thanks!
