2004 LX Brake Pedal Pop
2004 LX Brake Pedal Pop
I'm in the market for a new car right now and have been focusing on Civics.. tonight I drove a 2004 LX. So far it's the best I've seen... it's in great shape, but one thing made me concerned.
Almost every time I would brake, the pedal would pop/click. I felt it in the pedal more than I heard it, but a couple times it was very loud. Everything else seems okay.
The car does not have ABS, it's a standard transmission, 95,000 miles. Does anyone have any ideas? I've been googling around and keep finding that it's a relatively common issue with some Hondas, but I haven't found an explanation for what it is or if it's okay.
Thanks for any help you guys can provide..

Re: 2004 LX Brake Pedal Pop
My 05 has had the click/pop from day 1. There was something I saw about removing the brake switch and rotating it's position different. I have almost ordered a new switch just to see if any thing changes.
Re: 2004 LX Brake Pedal Pop
The times that it made a loud noise I was not the one driving but as the passenger it sounded like we had run over something small and metal.
@CraigW, yeah, I keep hearing about it from Civic owners... some have said it's a problem with the brake booster or along those lines.
From googling around and finding various forums, I've read a lot of people saying the part was ordered, etc., but the thread was never followed up on past that so I don't know if it resolved the issue.

Re: 2004 LX Brake Pedal Pop
No one ever post a solution the threads just hang open.
At some point there was a picture that showed the position of the switch in the bracket and the position it should be moved to or something similar.
I can only describe it as a clip, pop noise and sometimes a very slight feeling and movement at the same time in the pedal.
Won't do it every single time but does often.
My 05 is pushing 100k it has done this a long time.
I just last night placed a Majestic order...I should have thrown a brake switch on there, about $7-$9 for the part

Ultimately I think I could be okay with it, as long as it's not a precursor to serious brake problems.. have you had any issues?
The best part in this was that the dealer told me it was the ABS... despite the car not having it..

Just look car over real close, any purchase. (I have never had any brake issues) The brake fluid should be changed every 3 years so the fluid should have been done by now.
Check the tops of the stuts for leaking (under the boots/covers) near the brass colored top caps. You can see it with the wheels on, overtop tires.
Check for any maintenance records to see what has been done. All the fluids have rated life.

Yeah, I've been checking out everything I can think to while on the lots but as far as mechanical issues go.. I think I would only catch something really obvious. This is what concerns me about buying from a dealer - they generally wont let you take it to a mechanic before the sale.
I'm going back tomorrow to look at it and will try to check some stuff out more closely. The dealer does not have maintenance records, but the Carfax shows regular servicing at Honda dealers. The car is also immaculate.. My guess (hope) is that everything has been taken care of.
