Should I be Concerned?
Just a quick question.
My car is a 2002 Civic EX Sedan Auto.
Up until a couple days ago, I would get in the car put the key in the ignition and instantly turn it to start and after about 1 1/2 cranks it would start. This took all of 2 seconds.
I have changed nothing, made no modifications at all to the car in the last month.
With that said now I get in the car put the key in the ignition and try to start it and it turns over 5 or 6 times before it starts
. It does start and it runs the same as always (Great) it is just turning over more before it starts.
I have a good new battery and the starter is fine (it spins fast).
If I get in the car and turn the key to ON but not start it and I let it set till the CEL goes off then start it, it fires right off. So with that said I think that the fuel is draining back into the tank.
What say you guys?

Re: Should I be Concerned?
Hmm.. I'm thinking when you put the key to the position before the start, it then kicks on the fuel pump. Perhaps it's taking a second for it to prime. Maybe the fuel screen is clogged, but if you're still running good and getting good gas mileage... Makes me think it might not be that.. Could possibly be a fuel cap not holding 100% of the pressure it should and maybe the leak isn't big enough for the computer to pickup.. Theoretically if your cap isn't on or is faulty a cel will come on and have a code in the computer, but maybe the leak is small enough.. that it's not detected yet... Just my thoughts.. Good luck with it.. Honestly if it's still running good,etc.. I'd just keep an eye on it..
Re: Should I be Concerned?
I just re-read your post, you said you put a new battery in it... Why? Was it just old .. Or maybe your alternator isn't charging your battery ?? That could explain trouble starting, but not really that if you wait and then try that it starts...

Re: Should I be Concerned?
I put the battery in like 6 months ago, way before this.
I am still getting around the 32 MPG mark.
I always turn the fuel cap till it clicks atleast 4 or 5 times.
Is there a check valve in the fuel line?

Re: Should I be Concerned?
Yeah, I hope you get some more responses... Yeah, when I was talking about the cap, I wasn't suggesting you didn't tighten it... I was suggesting the cap itself was leaking.. Are your spark plugs fairly recent? You could pull one to see if you see anything.. I assume your plugs are probably alright.. I don't think there's a check valve in the fuel lines. How has it been since the post? Been starting right away after you give it a second in the position before start?? Unfortunately the only way I think the manual says to check the fuel system is to measure pressure out of the injectors and I know most people don't have the tool to do that..

Re: Should I be Concerned?
Spark plugs are fairly new less than 5000 miles. (Replaced 2+monthes before this started.)
It is still doing the same, I buy my gas at the same EXXON at the same pump every time. If I am out on the road somewhere I will purchase my gas at Exxon, Mobile or Shell, No exceptions.
I was thinking that it may be the fuel filter but still getting goo mpg so?????

Re: Should I be Concerned?
Same problem.
Change my plug every 30,000 miles (Denso Iridium)
New battery every 30,000 as well.
My next step was a compression test because I also through a Random cylinder misfire on all cylinders.
But I thought I would post my problem as well!
Bump for answers!

Re: Should I be Concerned?
So now that we have established that most of us that mod our civics have this problem. Should we be concerned or just accept it as a way of life?

Re: Should I be Concerned?
just accept. every car does that, even other stock civics ive seen dont start up the same all the time. most of the time its fine, all you can do is wait a few secs after turning car on before starting motor. this gives fuel pressure time to build and also the immobilizer to send the code to the ecu.
Re: Should I be Concerned?
That's funny because with Kpro, my immobilizer is disabled and it starts immediately within 2 cranks. Its never started that fast before Its a welcome change, lol.

Re: Should I be Concerned?
i doubt it, the ecu looks for that key signal, it would be alot of work, or just buy the kpro haha. the only possibility would be a reflash or some kind but i doubt honda would do that.

Re: Should I be Concerned?
yea but can you hook that up by itself without alarm, or how does it work if you just start with a key. and i heard it needs one of your key in it too, so its not really a bypass, more of a "behind the scenes" same way to start the car as before by supplying the code. i dont think it actually bypasses it.
Re: Should I be Concerned?
I dont know, but Im getting an alarm with starter this summer and I asked the guy that is gonna be installing it, and he said that I wouldnt have to sacrifice a key.

Re: Should I be Concerned?
maybe they changed it then where they can program it, but im pretty sure the immobilizer doesnt get disabled, the box just supplies the code automatically.
