hot brakes cant be normal?
hot brakes cant be normal?
hey guys i have this 2011 civic 2 door with auto and about 135000 km,. i changed the front disc pads last fall and since put on probly 10, 000 km. in between time. it was making a slight hum while driving that got a little more pronounced when hitting big bumps, like a rubbing sound. i thought maybe a bearing was goin.
when it was really cold like minus 30, the rubbing sound was ESPECIALLY BAD when backing up.
but it got warmer and nothing seem to get worse until i changed onto my summer wheels/tires which are both only 1 yr old.
very first highway drive this yr with the new wheels/tires gave me alot of howl which i surely dont remember as i wouldve been severely pissed brand new wheels n tires did this.
on an hour long drive i decided to check brakes and hubs for heating, both front wheels were very warm and brake rotors were too hot to touch more than a second. the hubs were much cooler but still warm
weirdly enough only one rear drum was even warm to the touch, the other was cool.
when i got home i measured the temps and both front rotors were 51 celcius and hub was about 37C. one rear drum was about 37 and other was 30
So i changed my rear shoes, actually only one each cuz the others seemed like new, almost no wear.
then i inspected front calipers and noticed once the piston was pushed all way out the boot was ripped/worn thru.
so i replaced that. the piston looked brand new but the caliper inside showed a little wear mark in one corner.
took it for a 10 min drive and same crap. both front rotors too hot to touch more than a second.
theres never been any pulsing like rotors are warped nor any discoloration or burning smell, just hot now and that howling sound in summer and rubbing sound this winter?
is this maybe some minor rotor warpage combined with new pads causing rubbing and nothing to worry about?
if so how do 1 yr old tires howl that much?
and what was that rubbing sound this winter?

rear drums...
they almost don't do any work, most of the work is done by the front discs. That's why they are almost new. My rear brakes were like new past 100k miles.

Brakes get hot.....literally using friction to slow the car. You should not be able to touch them after a good drive without burning yourself.
I know brakes getting used will get hot but why would 2 front rotors be hot as hell 52 celcius and one rear drum be 37 celcius while the other drum is only 30 celcius.
i completely bled out all the old dark fluid so maybe those same temps wont happen again im gonna start carry my temp gun and measure alot
Some tires can have more road noise than others. What kind of tire?

im sure they were not that loud the first season. i remember how they were way quieter than my almost worn out winter tires i bought the car with.
Im thinking a slight warped front rotors could be causing the brake heating AND noise ?
cuz the noise is a rorational type noise where one patch of tire is making more noise or one part of rotor keeps rubbing.
i asked canadian tire if they rent a rollout rotor warp tester but they dont.
where can i buy one of these and will it be cheaper than new calipers and rotors?
