2012 civic lx EPS light came on
2012 civic lx EPS light came on
I didnt realize this car had electronic steering rack and pinion till the light came on because wife usually drives this car. Light came on low speed coming to a stop. No power steering! Dropped car back off at house went in older honda, then came back and on a whim, Id thought I would try to see if light was still on with no power steering, and to my amazement, the car started normally and the light went out. I have the inovo 5110 code reader which didnt give me any codes. Do these cars do this from time to time. I really was hoping there was a definite common issue to look for but I havent found any online. Scary to think steering can actually FAIL while driving!!!!!!! So far I have found eps module failure, rack failure, some kind of torque sensor failure, connection failure, possable alternator/battery failure(alternator and battery check good by advance auto and me). I dont know how many people get the joy of experiencing this temporary failure. Not too comfortable owning this car right now!!!! Hunting forums and google to find more solutions so any tips appreciated!
I also am in need of a scantool suggestion bluetooth so I can look at the data. 97000 miles on the car

Re: 2012 civic lx EPS light came on
Are you in a cold climate? Sometimes the EPS modules will accumulate moisture and freeze, and then a quick restart after the car warms up gets rid of it. Happened with my TSX.

canton ohio so yes cold climate. Its only risen temps to 40 last couple of days. j Wellif its cold that did it.......then I have nothing to worry about. although warming up car would help this if it is. I supposed I could pull the module and look for water or water traces......

dealer said if no light is on then keep an eye on it. yeah real nice..wait till it does it again because we need to have it when the light is on. No codes stored. I wonder if car got warm enough to melt ice in module then it pissed it off then when it evaporated, it was happy.

That's effectively what happened with mine. Really cold start (under 14F) would always have the light on. I'd let it warm up for maybe 5-10 minutes or however long, restart the car, and the light would turn off. It was a service bulletin the 2nd generation TSX (what I had) but it was only for the 2010-2014 models, so it didn't apply to my 2009. The module itself was several hundred and still prone to failure based on it being located in the wheel well, so I never bothered dealing with it. Either way, total failure is pretty rare. Even if you have no power steering assist, they're not terribly difficult to drive once you get moving.
Re: 2012 civic lx EPS light came on
we were guessing it was 30s for temps outside and dont remember what the low was. so not sure if temps had risen or in the ballpark for this scenario. I do believe the civic LX is in the passenger kickpanel inside. Wheelwell vs kickpanel I dont know if better or worse. Wheelwell may be colder not sure if the engine temp would heat it up enough. We had driven 2.4 miles (googled it) and were just in the left hand double turn lane when it did it. I dont also yet know if theres things I can check on the rack itself for failing points like rust or torn boots so I will look that up. I think the torque sensors in the column. Also dont understand that a speed sensor can do this. Is there a specific speed sensor somewhere or are they just using all 4 speed sensors at the wheels. Still listening to slight oddball noises accelerating they are faint but there.
