Cheap tires
Cheap tires
New to the forum here. Just purchased an 06 Civic coupeLX. I’ve owned an 05 previous as well as a 99 Accord that just ended it’s existence after 236,000 miles. My problem is I have excessive road noise in car. Doesn’t matter the road surface type or speed I’m driving. Not sure if this is a typical issue with this year Civic or not. Stopped by a dealership by the house and let them check it out. Mech took it for a road test and said it’s the tires are a little choppy. . Like I said I just bought it and it had brand new tires on it. The loud road noise threw me off, just wanted to make sure it wasn’t something else. Im not looking or expecting to have a completely soundproof ride inside, I get it. The current tires are Kelly Charger GT. The tires are literally a month old. Just want to know what tire you would recommend to have a quieter ride? Or am I just dealing with a common problem with this model year? Would hate to throw money out on some tires and it makes no difference. On the other hand I’m thinking this can’t be normal wanting to wear earplugs! Thanks for any insight.
Re: Cheap tires
The noise is a louder hum type sound. It doesn’t matter on what type of pavement or at what speed I’m driving. Also turning the steering wheel right or left has no effect on the noise. At first I was thinking it was a wheel bearing. That’s why I took it to Honda to have it looked at. They said front end was good to go. They told me to start with the tires. They test drove the vehicle. I’m gonna rotate the tires like mentioned earlier to start. Then I’m going to stop by a tire dealer to check on tires. I have done a little research on quieter tires. I just can’t believe this noise could be attributed to road noise. That’s why I asked earlier was this a common complaint with the 06.

Re: Cheap tires
clear out the easier and cheaper potential causes first
PS: If after rotating and if noise is gone, but comes back later on, it could be that your car have still the original rear control arms (there was a recall for that, but expired) that would wear the rear tires and potentially cause the noise. But don't jump to this yet, like said, recall expired and you would need to get aftermarket control arms.

Re: Cheap tires
Ok thanks! I’m going to rotate this weekend. The noise does seem to be emanating from the front wheels. I drove home from work today in traffic. The sound is as prevalent at 10mph as 65mph. It doesn’t get louder or softer it’s a constant. Again thanks for your advice. It’s an 06 with 78000 on it. It’s just a baby and that’s what’s got me scratching my head.
Re: Cheap tires
Update. Took to a tire shop last night. Three of the tires had wear they also described as ‘choppy’. The ‘new tires’ I thought that actually still looked good to me were 9 years old. Purchased a new set of tires. The sound now is much quieter than before. I can deal with the remaining road noise.
