No start, no crank, one click

2006 DX 90k miles, automatic

Randomly would not start since about December 2019. Fiance described it as, "it just did nothing when I turned the key but would start the second or third time I tried it".

Last week it stopped starting, battery voltage is 12.6, load test is good, turn key and you hear a click from starter. It is one single click and nothing else.

I was in the car when this happened, I heard the starter try to turn maybe once then stop. After that, dead, only one click from starter when the key is turned to start.

I have already bought a new starter but I have been reading that it could be many other causes. I have eliminated the key security possibility. I was planning to check the relay in position 7 in the relay box under the hood.

Aside from this does anyone have a recommendation as to whether this sounds like a bad starter? Is this common?

Thanks in advance

I would guess bad starter, maybe a bad connection.
Try smacking the starter and see if it will start

I was planning to do that as well, thanks for the input.

I'm dreading replacing it since it looks like a pain.

No problem, too many times threads in forums start with a question with no resolution.

No, you'll have to check the ignition switch, start relay and all associated wiring.

Re: No start, no crank, one click

I replaced the relay under the dash just in case but it didn’t work. However, I kept on cranking and there was a burnt smell. I guess the starter definitely needs replacing. 👎
