Airbag light on? [solved]

The airbag light stays on all the time. Is there a sensor in the seat that's supposed to detect when someone's sitting in it? Maybe mines broken?

re: Airbag light on? [solved]

Bet it is the SRS 9-3 code for a faulty driver's seat belt buckle switch - common issue.

Check for an airbag recall. There have been a few over the years which could also be your problem.

DIY instructions to check your question
  1. turn the engine on.
  2. Keep it parked.
  3. Open the door
  4. get out of the car
  5. walk to the passenger side
  6. open the door
  7. sit on the passenger seat
  8. check if light is still on.

re: Airbag light on? [solved]

I just cleared it using a paper clip after watching this video. Bought the car a year ago and this is the first time I got the light off. No more black tape on instrument cluster to hide the annoying light lol!

Re: Airbag light on? [solved]

Update: After 2 days driving 300 miles the light has stayed off. Clearing the light also made the red blinking security light on radio work for the first time since I had the car.

Re: Airbag light on? [solved]

lol you lucked out. There's a procedure of how to read SRS codes. I know I updated it at some point. It'd be worth having in your troubleshooting arsenal

edit: here's a link for my post about reading SRS codes

Re: Airbag light on? [solved]

Good to see the issue was resolved. It still may be worth checking for active recalls with the Takata airbags.

Maybe not.

My '03 civic SRS light came on and with code 9-3. Searching produced this vid that describes how the little pin inside the buckle doesn't work properly anymore, probably because of dirt and grime.

I followed the vid to open the buckle with a T10. Front and back of case have to come off. The little red "boot" that surrounds the pin prevents (so the vid says) contact cleaner from getting in. I really didn't want to destroy that boot so manipulated the pin WHILE spraying cleaner. Many many times.

Then I did the paper clip trick to reset the light. Started the car and poof--light stays off.

Now, I just did that so I don't know: I might have to go in again and this time, remove that boot. Time will tell.

This vid is exactly how I did the (temporary?) fix.

Re: Airbag light on? [solved]

I did a similar cleaning of my driver buckle probably like 8-9 years ago, still working to this day.

Re: Airbag light on? [solved]

Mine worked for about 4 years until the light came back on for the passenger side deflator failure, causing the code to permanently return. Can’t say for certain if 9-3 ever came back or not because I never fixed the deflator.

Re: Airbag light on? [solved]

Been a year since I cleaned the "button" and reset with the paper clip and the light is still off. The buckle is pretty difficult to release when exiting the car but that is a diff issue.
