2001 honda civic ex transmission trouble

i know this is probably annoying hearing this cause im sure im not the first one to ask having some transmission problems with my 2001 honda civic ex automatic has almost 260,000 miles and purchased used with about 160,000 miles. ok well my wife drives it the most she was on her way to work and she said when it went to shift to second gear it rev up to 4k rpms and then shifted very roughly. she said it was only when it shifted from first to second. she made it to work safely on her break she went to go get something to eat and put in reverse and had to give it some gas for it to move. once she got out she shifted into drive and she said it would not go anywhere and went back into reverse same deal nothing so she had to get it pushed back into a parking spot. i guess there was a lady behind her that said it smelled like a burnt belt. when i was able to get there i was checking it out shifted through every gear and the vehicle would not move it would rev but thats about it. i check the tranny fluid and it was brownish and smelled burnt i checked the fluid two months ago and it was a nice red color but not now. im trying to think of the hopefully cheaper fixes first so what do yall think could it be the transmission solenoid, torque converter, needs a flush. please help its our only vehicle and dont have much money. if you can tell me what you think it might be that is wrong and how i can check it i would really appreciate thank you very much

At 3 a.m. redneck tow your buddy's car with a rope or chain tied to your car. Place your car to the edge of the nearest boat ramp with the rear of your car facing water. Slam it into Drive and if kicks in to gear keep going. If it doesn't go into gear, remove license plate and push it down the ramp..instant reef.. Lol.

Joking aside.. was it at the correct fluid level when you check it the night it crapped out on your wife?
Low fluid level could cause it to not go into gear but, being that you said it smelled burnt and had a brownish tint to it means there was a least some on the dip-stick.
