wow, okay...hmmm
1) i have yet to have any problems with any of the other gears (knock on wood)
2)what is up with all the transmissions being rebuilt and people having 2 or more transmissions? are you just driving your car hard or is it not properly tuned or is it normal wear and tear? i am directing this question to those who have had multiple or rebuilt trannys.
i drive my car pretty hard and have had no problems...just curious.
and you know, if these are all common problems, why isn't there a recall on out trannys???

Mine is a 5-speed. I had problems from when I first got it. 2nd gear was popping out. It continued to get worse, so I took it to the dealership before the warranty ran out. It took a couple of times to get it right, but now it seems to be fine except it don't go into reverse that well, but it doesn't happen all the time.

i got the car back yesterday, they installed a new 2nd and 3rd gear shift fork, synchronizer, manual tranny fluid, right and left control arms, driver side window regulator, but they forgot to do my passenger side window regulator, so i can take it back in the next 30 days and theyl do that for free.
any of you that have problems, write a nasty letter to honda about how ur upset that your honda isnt lasting like other hondas are and you wont reccommend anyone to buy a honda and youl get something for free out of it, i got lik $1500 in new parts for free

No, everyone needs to write to consumer affairs AND Honda, BBB, everyone. It's a pain and takes time but with enough complaints hopefully it will have some recourse or affect their bottom line in the future. I don't care, my tranny has been rebuilt so my objective now is to spread the word about how horrible these transmissions are. Maybe they will re-think their engineering soon and make some serious changes. If not, it will come back to bite them and this is only the beginning.
2002 LX coupe, automatic, 90+k miles, just diagnosed dead. Tranny fluid was good ... except for a crap load of magnetic shavings. Car has always been gently driven and dealer serviced by the book too.
(In the meantime, the borrowed car is a 5 cylinder Nissan Maxima. Yes, I know it has a V6. Sadly, that number is correct.)
-- Kane ... yep, so much for Honda reliability.

it sucks our transmissions suck...kinda makes you wonder why hondas are so good then! it almost makes me paranoid that something is wrong with mine. every little noise or everytime i find it hard to get it into a gear, almost as if i were a hypochondriac when it comes to my car

I have gone through 2 5 speeds. Both times it was the input shaft bearing.
I am working with some companies to produce some high speed bearings with metal cages that will be direct replacements for the cheezy plastic cage bearings in the stock 5 speeds.
Once i test these out in my other tranny, i will post part numbers, prices, and where to buy the bearings. I may also do a DIY on how to install them.

Without sounding like too much of a newbie *** is related to the trans fluid on automatics? I see Honda states in the owners manual that normal Dexron III can be used as a replacement unitl the Honda brand is swapped in but if Dexron is used shift quality and trans life can suffer. Any connection or truth to that?

ya it is already known that anything other than oem fluid will ruin the tranny. well heck they mess up even with honda fluid so who knows. bad clutch pack so fluid won't really help that.

welp, it looks like i can finally post in this thread (as if it were a good thing).
lately, my clutch squeaks then engaging and releasing (yeah, i know there is a thread about this somewhere). also, i thought there was something loose around my engine (a thread i posted a while back) and some thought it was new belts or a loose pulley. turns out the noise is coming from my transmission!! there is something in there that rattles when putting it into 1st-3rd as well as reverse. as for 4th and 5th, i don't know, my engine and exhaust are too loud to tell. god knows what it is though...the tranny works fine though...no slipping or anything.
any comments, thoughts, feelings or emotions?

I traded my Civic in on Saturday and picked up a beautiful 2000 Chrysler Town and County for the Wife. Good-bye 7th Generation Civics, I shall never own another.
Now I'm driving her old Honda, 1992 Accord w/ 176,000 miles and running strong. It's been maintained VERY well so it should run for along time with good up-keep. It will be picking up 3,000 miles a month with my commute, but I have faith in older Honda cars.
What I learned about this experience, I'll be changing the transmission fluid in all my cars every 20-25,000 miles. Its not real cheap, but better than replacing a transmission. I can't say doing that would have stopped the Civic's from having problems (of course not), but the more debri you can keep out of the filterless tranny the better. My Wife's Accord is also filterless but it shifts crisper than my Civic ever did.

You guys are putting the spooks in me. Are 7th's just know for bad transmissions? How many of you guys that are responding here race or beat on them hard? How many do the maintenance required or a little better?
My 98 has 84k on it and shifts great. My 2001 has 33k and I hope it goes a whole lot more!

Mine is slipping at 48k miles thats it! I baby the crap outta it like you wouldn't believe. fluid change every 10k miles, even a new tranny cooler. I've redlined it a handful of times in 4 years. Rarely take it above 4k in daily driving. the stupid pos still starts to slip.
Wow!
Do any of you use regular Dexron III instead of Honda fluid in your automatics? I wonder if that has something to do with them going out like Honda states?
For those who have smoked an automatic what did you go back with? I would just like to know just in case! Is a complete new unit from Honda fairly cost effective? I am pretty sure nobody locally builds Honda automatics so if you don't go new then do you just take another chance on a junk yard unit?

I was going to buy a used tranny and install myself. Far as I can tell, Honda hasn't fixed the defect in these tranny's so why buy new? I'd rather have an $850 turd than a $2000 turd.
i think my tranny has the worst slippage on this site and yet its still going.....**** i do n drops on purpose and its still not dying.

Read through this thread ... there's a pattern, y'know.
Honda is obviously aware too. Otherwise they wouldn't have picked up the tab.
-- Kane ... but you better have some proof to back up you've been nice to your car.
