Re: Who's had a bad transmission? *UPDATED*
yeah like i said before, slipping when cold is not the end of the world and you could get years more life. if everything works normally when hot, you should be okay for now. all 01-05 autos have the same issues, some more than others but also you have to remember the cars are getting older and most ppl with a 10 yr old civic will not be going straight to the internet to post about their failed trans. im sure there are far greater numbers of failure than you think. even just talking to local shops here in this small town, they say they replaced literally hundreds of 7thgen auto trans.
Re: Who's had a bad transmission? *UPDATED*
From what i hear, honda brought in the upgraded clutch packs in the 04s.
On carcomplaints the 03 has a lot less than 01 and 02 and even 04 amd 05 even less, sure age has to do with it...but we have to remember, just going from year to year is a significant drop in complaints on there. A cars trans wont be that much higher in just a year or two. An 04 trans is still 8 years of usage, so drivers should easily be able to hit close to 100k km or even that easily in that time. Whereas if you look at the 01 complaints, there as a ton that got posted before 2009 (which is what do you know 8years after the car has been out). Trust me, ive done my research on that site too and analyzed when most of the reports were posted.
Just curious how you can tell if your 2-3 shift, shifs hard or not. When you say hard, how an you tell? I just need to find out if mine has the revised pack. Its off an 04 acura EL.

This morning I saw the most recent trans problem thread, and then found some others, including this one. Hadn't been aware of the trans problems on the early 7 gens, and have spent the past couple hours checking this out. It always seems to come back to the bad clutches and lack of a filter that can't be routinely changed. I'm concerned because my daughter has an '03 with 145K on it, and am now wondering what the strategy should be, when and if tranny problems begin. But, the line that I highlighted above has me wondering if they began using these better clutches starting with the '03s, or maybe even the later '02s. One piece of information that may support this is that on carcomplaints.com the numbers for '03 are much lower (8%) of what was listed for 2001, after having dropped around 60% in 2002. Now, some of this may just simply be less miles on the '03 and later years, but many of these vehicles now have more than enough miles to start seeing higher numbers of complaints if the problem was still like it was in '01. I've seen GB post a number of times that he thought nothing had been changed, but I wonder if there's any way of finding out for sure?
the '03 cut off mark really depends on when your daughter's civic was manufactured. i have a 2003 honda civic that was manufactured in October 2002. at 58,000 my auto-trans started to shift hard. at 63,000 it started to slip. changing the fluid got me to 70,000 at which point it started to whine and slip all of the time so i decided to take it in to get checked out. honda gave me $1,000 towards a replacement rebuilt auto-trans (if i bought it from a dealership) - out the door cost was $1,900. it came with a new 36,000/36months warranty. i noticed that the shift from gear 2-3 is much harder than my original transmission. Gearbox (a very knowledgeable member on this forum with 7th gen civics) told me that means i most likely have the revised clutch pack as the new clutch pack results in a less fluid shift - a "harder shift" as you would call it.
my civic now has a little over 128,000 miles and the hard shift from 2-3 is still there. i haven't noticed any performance issues or shifting issues besides that. at 104,000 i had to replace both front struts due to leakage ($368) and both rear drum cylinders due to leakage as well ($248). the rear cam seal and valve cover seals also were leaking ($98). these types of repairs wouldn't be necessary on the 6th generation Civic as the materials and parts used were of much higher quality. i am still kicking myself to this day for trading in my 1997 Civic for the 2003 Civic. however, in the grand scheme of things, these Civics still have a better reputation than the Ford Focus, Chevy Cavalier/Cobalt, and i prefer the Civic over the Corolla. this 10 year old car gets me 36mpg on the highway going 72mph and 38-40mpg going 60mph, and i drive 52 highway miles each day. 10 years later since this car was made, 2012 Civics/Corollas/Elantras/Focus get the same mileage. what a rip off, right? so as you can see, while Honda did value engineer significant quality out of the 7th generation Civic, they did one heck of a good job on fuel efficiency.
what is the date of manufacturer on your daughter's Civic? if it is in 2002 i would start preparing for the inevitable since it's not a matter of if, but when the transmission will fail. best advice i have is to change the fluid every 30K miles, then every paycheck set aside a little money and save up for what could be coming

Here's another thought about these 7 gen tranny problems, one that I don't recall reading in these threads (might be there, but I didn't see it). My daughter went to school in TN, and now works in VA. Because of this, the great majority of her '03 miles has been highway, driving and forth to MA - many very long trips, and almost always at constant speed. Plus, like most females, she doesn't feel the need to put down a bit of rubber every other day or so (never actually did this myself, but I've heard about lots of guys who do
). So the miles on her car are a MUCH different 145K miles (transmission-wise anyway), as compared to most other vehicles. So, I'm thinking that since the primary problem is the inferior clutches that break down much too quickly, perhaps the owner's driving patterns and habits are a big factor in how long they actualy last. What I'm saying is probably true for the tranny on any vehicle, but maybe driver differences are amplified with these 7 gens because the components are so iffy to begin with. Thoughts on this?

Thoughts on this?Does anyone know generally how far back a cars build date is from when its delivered to the dealer? Palsanas is 4-5 months, his was bought May and built Jan/Feb. Im just wondering what are the odds mine was built in 04 since the car was delivered to the dealer in May 31, 04 and wasnt first registered until Sept 04.

Re: Who's had a bad transmission? *UPDATED*
cvguy-im sure a trans that has all highway miles would last longer, esp one with such weak clutches. the majority of the wear happens each time you shift. so the more shifts, the older the trans gets and the faster it ages. true for any car, but esp for these defective trans.

im really stressed out right now.I need to do some more experimenting tommorow and try to post videos for analysis. Ive recorded the exact roads, dates and times when i had these flares and going to retrace them tommorow.

yeah they can really fail at any time without any warning according to some posts. you could be driving tomorrow and bam car doesnt move in any gear.
Re: Who's had a bad transmission? *UPDATED*
Many thanks GB, and all the other guys posting this very helpful info. On Friday I wasn't even aware of this 7 gen trans problem. But now, after spending hours reading through these threads, I've found out WAY MORE than I ever wanted to know about it
Re: Who's had a bad transmission? *UPDATED*
I just came back from testing some more. I really wish I got the other day on tape cause im not sure if the 400rpm flare im possibly exxagerating. Good chance it was only 200rpm like it usually is. But I tried going on the same roads that had the flares on and couldnt get it to happen again.
This is what i notice k. If the car is in OD for longer than 4-5secs after its been shifted from D3, then it will flare each time in the 2000-3000rpm range going into 4th. when I shift from D3 in 3rd to OD for 4th at the min. speed limit allowed for it to shift right away (which is 60kmh on my car), so once I hit 60kmh I shift to OD, it shifts right away with light throttle and no flare. Even medium throttle (around 2700rpms) it wil shift with no flare.
Now this is the ONLY time where i would actually allow it to stay in OD for longer than 4-5secs and its not intentional. if I do heavier throttle (around 2800rpms) and shift from D3 to OD when I hit 60kmh and say it stays in OD for 4-5 secs or longer before it shifts to 4th between 2000-3000rpms then it will flare. Because with heavier throttle, it wont shift to 4th til bit later cause the shift point changes so it stays in OD for few secs longer than usually would.
LEt me know what you think. This has to mean something. So thats why its very critical of me having to throttle past 3000rpms when im about to shift into 4th in OD. Like merging.

Re: Who's had a bad transmission? *UPDATED*
Save her while you can (if you can). First run out and get an inline tranny filter. Then get a garage to flush the tranny fluid. (not just DIY drop and fill. you need to flush out all the dirty fluid. a drop and fill will replace only about 3quarts. have them install the filter on the cooler line AFTER the flush.

Re: Who's had a bad transmission? *UPDATED*
i ran a filter for a while and then gave up. unless you started when the car was new, the internal filter already clogged in less than 5k miles. and even when new, i think the fluid first passes the internal filter before being cooled in the radiator. so no hope either way. honda shouldve stuck with their removable pan filter design.
Re: Who's had a bad transmission? *UPDATED*
After having driven 300+ mi since my last aTF fluid change, i do still notice slipping happening!!!!. Not so prominent but its there.Still have to pull off and on the gas pedal to make it go further/accelerate.
Slipping in my opinion is never going away until replacement/rebuild.
How severe of a slipping is it? sometimes it ANNOYS me, how smooth when cold this car really starts, like there is absolutely no problem with it, but once hot and having driven 50+ mi of city driving, wow, it begins slipping and have problems accelerating/moving
I am wondering if i should do a final ATF fluid change (third & final within three/four weeks.) I do see improvement upon transfluid change, but cant say that SLIPPING HAS COMPLETELY BEEN TAKEN CARE OF ..its still slipping, will continue to slip but as long as i know, there isnt much there that can be done about it.
Heck, its already lot more miles i have for this car than i ever anticipated. Will be a good car for short commutes < 50mi .

Avoid hills at all costs of gasoline and clutch material. The end of the trans is soon, very soon. When the moment of failure happens limp your way into an open area allowing room for the wrecker to approach the front of the car.
Know ahead of time where you will have trans serviced.

Re: Who's had a bad transmission? *UPDATED*
It may sound WIERD but i am waiting until its 200k+ mi on my car!!!! (That supposedly buys me upto 5mos of time, without having to change tires, ($400) Body work($300) and A/c radiator issues ($380).
i m praying tranny dont fail me before 200k.
Its 178108 mi right now!!!!. I've already had 2 tranny rebuilts.
If it does,(the tranny) its over!!!!!.. funeral date will be scheduled ($300 gain)
maybe i will just part out!!!!!. .
The engine i am mighty proud of havent given me any probs just yet!!!!!.
BTW, i am not considered a GOOD CARE TAKER OF MY CAR...i do have to admit that. If only absolutely positively NEEDED then i actually find a cheapo mechanic and get it done!!!!
Thats just how i have gotten to 178k mi so far!!!!. its for real. i only speak the truth, nothing else but the truth, so save me GOD.
Upto almost 99k, i have had no major breakdowns/accidents/problems with the car.
wish me luck!!!!!

Re: Who's had a bad transmission? *UPDATED*
i would never replace something that isnt broken yet. and as good of a fluid as maxlife is, it cannot completely cure slipping as this is a mechanical problem that can only be solved with more friction material (new clutch plates).
Re: Who's had a bad transmission? *UPDATED*
I agree gb; i have a wait and see attitude
K cera cera what will be will be!!!!!!!!!!!!
Did i mention that besides tranny, there r abt $2k in more expenses listed for my car!!!!
lol

Re: Who's had a bad transmission? *UPDATED*
A few days ago I started noticing a "new" whining noise when I drove the car. Yesterday the tranny randomly flared revs each time it shifted (no matter if it was 1st to 2nd, or 2nd to 3rd) and after 20 mins the car just wouldn't get into gear. When I let the car sit, it would intermittently catch gear and let me drive 20-40mph mph or so and then it wouldn't gain more speed and eventually the engine will rev and only rev. If i let the car cool down again, it would do the same but after a mile or two the problem will occur again.
is this in need of a tranny rebuilt or can cleaning the strainer fix my troubles? or ??

Re: Who's had a bad transmission? *UPDATED*
all you can really do without major repair is change the trans fluid and hope for some more life. new fluid can somewhat clear up the filter screen enough to increase fluid pressures. but not by much...
Re: Who's had a bad transmission? *UPDATED*
It turned on while i pulled over on the fwy but I pulled the battery and reset the computer to clear the code. I was desperate and that was the only way i knew to clear a code temporarily. It hasn't came back on yet but then again I haven't had time to visit my car since it got towed to my parents house. If it comes on this weekend when I work on it, i'll be sure to post it!
thanks gearbox, i'll try this and hopefully the expensive honda atf will help

Had a chance today to perform a drain and fill procedure. Color was on the darker side of red compared to the original pink. After 10 mins driving, the CEL came on with code P0730. Sigh this is probably the worst problem Ive had to deal with yet on my car... *sigh

Re: Who's had a bad transmission? *UPDATED*
yikes, could still be lucky and have it be something small like a stuck solenoid or valve body, but doubt it. incorrect gear ratio basically means your trans is done.
Re: Who's had a bad transmission? *UPDATED*
Four months after my rebuild I have noticed a static shake when the trans engages fourth gear. It feels like the car is rolling over equally spaced bumps in the road. Not every time. Just whenever the trans feels like doing it.
Anyone have some input about that problem?

2002 EX Auto 120K, changed the fluid every third oil change. All this Honda reliability is a crock of BS. This car has been nothing but garbage. Windows stopped working, all the clocth on the interior doors fell off, Door handles broke, Did the whole tining belt, tensioner, waterpump fiasco, now,
Daughter driving home started runnung like crap, all sorts of dash lights on, transmission clunking and slipping.
Next moring I go out, try to start it, does but with lots of coaxing, when on engine sillouette light on, green key flashing, putting in reverse responds in a cluck as does drive with slipping. Borrowed my freinds computer scanner ( MAC TOOLS EC150 ), indicates communication error. On line says to disconnect battery cables and touch them for 15 minutes or so so clear it out ( NOte here, ground was a little loose on battery connection ). Fixed battery connections started the car again with some coaxing, same thing, can not communicate with the computer.
I am thinking that maybe this ground jumping around took out the ECU ? Would all these other oddities be a result of a bad ECU like the transmission acting strangely. I have run Mobil One in it since I got it and drained the tranny fluid every 3rd oil change, it's nice and clean.....
Any help/Guidance appreciated.
Also I am reading if I get another ECU I need Honda to reprogram it for me ? How much do they screw you for that ?

For anyone that is trying to find a way to fix this problem without spending a lot of money. I just purchased a Master Overhaul Kit from a distributor of Alto parts. TCI used to make this same kit, but for some reason they quit a few years back. Go on Alto's website and look through their distributor search menu and make a few calls. These people have a full rebuild kit with Red Eagle clutches and Kolene Steels along with all the soft parts to finish the job. The price is between $130-$150, which is about half the amount for the old TCI Master Rebuild Kit. It may take a few tries and some time to search one down but I found two today. 208-523-1718 is a phone number for a transmission shop in Idaho that deals with these. Ask for Tracy
