Toyota has made lots of great cars, great engines. But, I just like Honda's engine better.

Now, I am dreaming about the K engine and since engine swap may be too expensive to do so getting the right car from the start might be a better deal from RSX or TSX. be worry free from transmission problem.

?? I think even Acura TL has suffered from pressure switch in their trans too. : D

if you love Honda, you have to live with the crippled trans.

Re: Who's had a bad transmission? *UPDATED*

My turn to contribute.

2001 lx 5 speed

I figured out from this thread

https://www.civicforums.com/forums/3...save-some.html

that my input shaft bearing is failing.
I took it to the shop that put in a new motor, and the guy who owns the shop took it down the street for a test drive and told me not to drive too hard, and not to drive it at all, and to leave it at his shop and all sorts of rubbish.

Of course once I left I drove it as hard as always...

Anyways, what does everyone think about selling my 7th gen and picking up a 95 EX?

My parents already paid for the car, $3k+ used and then a new motor, another $3k+

How much money could I recoup?

Edit: forgot to say, car has 138k, motor has roughly 110k

Re: Who's had a bad transmission? *UPDATED*

I just emailed a local trans. shop and they had this to say:

David,
1998-2005 Hondas, accros the board have massive transmission failure rate. Either the converter or 2nd gear clutches fail which lead to a complete failure most of the time because the filter cannot be changed without disassembling the trans and it gets plugged with clutch debris and then the trans fails. That leads to buying a used one-We NEVER reccomed buying used transmissions that have a high failure rate because you can expect the same. Typically a used unit it above $1200 dollars, and then when you add labor, new seals, fluid you ve hit $2000 or very close. We can completety remanufacture one for a very similar cost with a superior torque converter and all new updated solenoids. We remanufacture a honda every week, sometimes 2. The best thing to do is change the fluid every year for about $140.00 and just cross your fingers. Hondas have been great cars and it is unfortunate that they have this problem. Once they have been rebuilt , Ive never seen a repeat failure at least at our shop. Thanks for contacting us.

Does that sound like a reasonable way to repair it? How effective do you guys think it is to remanufacture a transmission? Sounds good to me, at least I have an option if this thing ever fails me. Hopefully that will never happen!

Re: Who's had a bad transmission? *UPDATED*

Hey guys great thread.
I bought my 2001 Civic Si used so I'm not entirely sure on the maintenance history, I replaced the clutch less then a year ago, and just recently I noticed 3rd gear is not going in as smoothly as before, is this my tranny starting to fail??? I know for a fact I need the Input shaft bearing as my car makes that noise when I release the clutch. I'm hoping it might be one of the or both the Input and Throwout bearings

Thanks

Is it hard to get into gear? Is it clashing? Is the floor fully clutched in when you go into 3rd?

01-05 auto trans will work, theyre all basically the same. the newer ones have less miles so should last longer. i dont think they ever fixed the defects tho so only a matter of time til it goes bad again.

Re: Who's had a bad transmission? *UPDATED*

ive been living with the slip for nearly 50k miles so there is a good chance you will still get some more life. but then again, its hard to say. the best case is only slipping when cold, that means when the fluid and seals warm up the trans functions normally. but eventually it will fail. its just the design. it might be a good idea to start looking for a different car if you dont plan to do a manual trans swap or a new motor.

Re: Who's had a bad transmission? *UPDATED*

My Civic died a couple of days ago, from a transmission problem. Judging by this topic and its age, I'm far from being the only one to have had this experience. Details:

2001 Civic LX Coupe. Automatic transmission. 180,000 miles on it. Not the original tranny -- that was replaced at about 50,000 miles, under warranty.

Tuesday we got a hard cold snap, first of the winter. Tuesday morning, the car was slow to shift into gear when I started it in the morning. After that it seemed okay. Wednesday morning, it was even slower to shift, but again it seemed to get better. However, Wednesday evening on the way home from work (about a 45 minute commute) I started experiencing loss of power at near-highway speeds, as if the transmission was slipping from Drive to Neutral and back. It lasted long enough to get me almost home, then gave up. No connection at all between engine and wheels. I pulled off to the side of the street, stopped and turned off the engine. After a couple of minutes of sitting it consented to move again, but died quickly again. At that point I said "enough" and called for a tow.

I have talked to a mechanic friend of mine, and he to his contacts at a local Honda dealer. Their opinion, short version: the transmission is gone, complete rebuild needed, at a cost of probably about $3000.

Anyone here care to offer a second opinion?

Re: Who's had a bad transmission? *UPDATED*

95k miles 2004 SOHC LX AUTO, driven VERY hard in San Diego (average 73 F)

Clunky, rough shifts but that's it. I drive my car as hard as it can be driven, and then a little harder than that if I'm on a mountain. If I can drive my car like it's a track car all day every day, I don't see why all of your transmissions are breaking. Also, here's what I am wondering:

How come all of your synchros are going out, guys? I mean... it is a WEAR item, if you aren't shifting and rev-matching at all, the synchros are going to wear much faster than if you were doing it very well, as far as I know. I wouldn't stomp on the brakes all day and wonder why they're worn down afterwards.

Transmissions are sensitive to load vs. temperature, load vs. speed, shift quality (manuals), and overall driving style. Since all of you have forgone listing any of this, how could we know if your tranny fails cause you do burnouts when its cold and drop the clutch hard as a ****? You have to list details that are involved with the components of the vehicle, and until we do that this forum has absolutely NO bearing on the build-quality of Honda transmissions, or otherwise. If you specify your car, mileage, temperature normally driven in, length normally driven while warm/cold and at what speeds, warm-up time, intensity of driving, and you do this on a fairly regular basis, ONLY THEN can we group together to try and find patterns... otherwise, we're just all giving each other handjobs @ the funeral.

I don't know the specifics of the this tranny, but I am a mechanical engineer.

2001 Ex Coupe. Auto tranny. My TCC (Torque Converter Clutch) is being popped on CEL as problem in lock up control. Is this an early sign of tranny failure? I'm heading out on a trip from MA to NY in a couple of days, and it seems to drive fine, just hangs ever so slightly from time to time when cold.

I'm already thinking manual swap. Found a 02 manual tranny for 600 bucks. What do you guys think? It'll be cheaper in the long run, and certainly less of a headache as well.

Probably majority of data are from the Californian, right!! : D
Like Atromos said, it will be very beneficial to list the driving style, region so there will be more data to analyze.

anyone with an auto that has slipping gears should try 3 drain and fills with valvoline maxlife atf. it greatly reduced slipping when cold on my 02 auto with 100k miles. very good fluid better than honda. shifts are still smooth as butter and no other problems have come up.

A tcc code means that there is not a 1:1 ratio of input to output speed when the tcc is engaged. IF that is the only code you have I would first think that maybe your tourqe convertor is junk, that is a known problem with the oem convertors, the tcc comes apart. I had a 2nd gear problem though and when I rebuilt it I rolled a plastic shaft seal on the mainshaft going to the convertor. It gave me a tcc code. One of these maybe bad too.

[QUOTE=vfr661;4551751]2002 Civic EX Manual transmission
Bad input shaft bearing replaced at 116K miles

Bad transmission design: requires 10+ hours to take the tranny out and splitting the case to replace a $25

The bearing uses a plastic cage to space the bearings n the cage breaks so the bearings bind up on one side.

My input shaft bearing went at 45k in my 05. I replaced it myself tho. The input shaft bearing can be replaced with just a flathead screwdriver to remove it n a large socket to install it plus new seal and gasket maker.

I ended up having the trans fully rebuilt with a kit I got off transtar on ebay at 115k

Welll ..yer doing Something? oddly wrong . NTN brand bearings WITH the plastic cages are of Very good quality indeed. Honda has been using those for Decades. But these get destroyed by that Redline Oil crap as example..

2002 Civic Si Veloz (aka EX) 177,oookms (110,000 mi)

Slipping like crazy with hard accelleration from standstill to first. When it catches, it's a big jolt.

Fluid is good. Any thoughts? There was quite a bit of shavings at my last drain and fill 3 months ago.

try some valvoline maxlife dex/merc atf. you can do 3x drain and fills if the fluid inside is in good condition and not black or burnt. it made a world of difference in my 7thgen auto. less slipping, smoother shifts, completely changed feel of the car. in fact it shifts better than when the car was new. im hoping for less slipping this winter, but im not expecting miracles since the trans is already damaged. im right around 101k miles now. usually i would get slipping in the summer before the trans warmed up, now with the maxlife i get no slipping if i drive the car right after starting it.

I have just joined this site trying to find some info myself. I live in ireland and bought a 2001 ex coupe 1.7 m/t 2 years ago. I noticed about a year ago that it was hard to get int 2nd and 4th gear sometimes and had stiff shifting in most gears, it would also pop out of 2nd some times. about a month ago i had to get all the gear box bearings and the clutch bearing replaced which cost me about 800 euros. I have noticed that the problem still remains with the stiff shifting etc. I found these problems listed on www.alldatadiy.com along with other recalls such as airbag malfunction. I have rang so dealers in Ireland and all of them say they will replace the airbag, but there is no recall or problems with the gear box listed, when there clearly is. They wont even tell me what the problems were on the recalls for the same models of my car. I am afraid now that there is some reason for the stiff shifting which will make the gearbox fail again after paying for all the new bearings and work. it seems that the gear box in these paticular models are weak and just badly made. If anyoune has any similar expierience id be interested to hear.

Re: Who's had a bad transmission? *UPDATED*

hi there, i dont know much about the mechanics of a car just the basics. I live in ireland so the average temp would be around 16-24 in summer and -7 to 8 in winter. I never jump in my car and just drive i always let it warm up first. i dont always drive the nuts off it either but when i do i know how to use the gear box ive driven manuals all my life. the stiff shifting and difficulty changing gear came into the car about a year after i bought it, i recently replaced al the gear box bearings and clutch bearing with i bought from honda and the problem persists. i saw theses problems listed on www.alldatadiy.com and it really got me worried about the situation. i rang honda in ireland and they were of no help to me. I just thought i would put it out here and see if anyone had gone through this with there civic. my model is the 2001 ex coupe 1.7 sohc 127 hp its a manual aswell

Hi All,
I am new and wondered if someone could help. I have a 2008 civic with ~70K miles. I had the transmission fluid changed ~3 months ago. Recently when decelerating or while depressing the brake and idle in drive, the engine will rev up and I can fell the car trying to accelerate. Thank you for any advice.
