Temperature gauge says engine hot
Temperature gauge says engine hot
While trying to find out the reason my car gets hot and temperature gauge rising I got a new radiator but it was not filled correctly. The guy filled it with only half gal coolant and sent me on my way. He also broke hood release and it was 150 miles before I could get hood open to add more coolant. System wasn't burped. there are two videos in the first post here.
take to a shop and ask them to do those tests. That should show if headgasket or not.

other types of tests won't work on these engines, so don't waste time or money on them, just the air pressure in the cylinders shown the videos work.

Re: Temperature gauge says engine hot
Sounds like that mechanic is a putz. First off the dash temp reading could be faulty and the way to verify coolant temp is to insert a high-temp thermometer in the radiator neck from cold start to operating temp and above. The other method is to use an infrared heat/temp detector aimed at coolant hoses and radiator.
Reason for overheated coolant system:
*Thermostat stuck closed
*Failing/failed water-pump. They can partially fail without leaking and will not move coolant fluid as rapidly as they should.
*Clogged radiator. Leaking radiator causing excessive fluid loss.
* External or internal (into cylinders) leaks.
* Breached head gasket.
