Rep Power: 0 02 Civic over heating while temp gauge normal
Hello everyone,
I have a 2002 civic 1.7l with 140000 miles on it and it over heated a couple months ago. I was helping someone change a flat tire and I had my civic running idle in park on the side of the road. I noticed the sound of my engine change as if it almost stalled but recovered just before stalling. 5 minutes later I started driving and noticed I didn’t have any power and could not drive faster than 50 km/hour or 30 miles/hour. I drove 3 miles to my home, in limp mode I’m assuming, and the entire time my temp gauge was showing a normal temp, just below halfway. I went to open the hood and noticed the hood and the engine were very hot as if the engine had over heated but the temp gauge still showed optimal engine temp. The gauge isn't stuck in that position either as it did drop to the minimum position after the engine cooled.
I’ve only driven it a ¼ mile up and down my road once a week since it happened 2 months ago, I was doing this to keep everything from seizing up. I haven’t noticed a drop in the level of coolant, oil in the coolant, or coolant in the oil.
I realize that there are several steps to troubleshooting an over temp problem but I was hoping that the temp gauge showing optimal engine temperature while overheating might mean something to someone who has had a similar problem.
Thanks,
Walter

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one
