Engine not revving over 4k rpm and loss of power sometimes

Hey guys,

For a little while I have been having a problem where the car is not revving over 4,000 rpm. I have tried many things such as changing the oil, replacing gaskets (for example on the Vtec solenoid spool valve), and ultimately replacing the entire Vtec solenoid spool valve. Now the car only revs over 4,000 rpm sometimes. Usually at a cold start it will rev over once then block off past 4k, but then if I drive the car for about a mile and restart it, it works fine.

Also, the car seems to lose some power sometimes when accelerating. It almost feels like the ac was turned on all of a sudden. It usually goes away after a few seconds. This has been a pretty new issue however. Not sure if they're related.

The one and only code the car is showing is P1259.

I'm pretty much stuck where to go and what to do at this point. I have done everything that I've seen on the internet that has talked about this problem.

I have a 2003 Si.

Thanks

We put an aftermarket one on, however we think the one that was on there to begin with was aftermarket as well, and it had worked fine until it didn't.

VTEC isn't used until the engine reaches a certain temp. So when it's cold the ECU will let you rev past the VTEC engagement point, as soon as it warms up it won't let you.

It's actually the exact opposite that happens. When it's cold it won't let me but when it's warm it does, that is, when I restart the car.

It'll only rev past 4k once while cold.

I misunderstood your original post.

When was the last time the oil was replaced/checked? If it's been a while, do it. If this is a three door hatch try cleaning the VTC strainer. It is behind a small cover on the head next to the idler pulley (pic below). I would also recommend cleaning the VTEC strainer (spool valve strainer) but I'm assuming that was replaced?

Dude I would love to find a junkyard that has my car. I need other parts too and I've wanted to go to one, but all of the ones I have looked at have no 2001-2005 Si's.

I changed the oil about a month and a half ago. I'll check out the VTC strainer, since that's something I haven't looked into yet. Yes, the VTEC strainer is only a week or two new.
